Auto Leasing Returns as U.S. Used-Car Prices Rebound

General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group LLC resumed offering leases to buyers in August and September through their shared financing arm, GMAC Financial Services, after halting the practice as car demand fell in 2008. Ford Motor Co. plans more leasing promotions this year, while Toyota Motor Corp. makes it part of a $1 billion fourth-quarter marketing push. “Leasing is really a critical piece of the business because people who lease have much higher loyalty to your brand,” Jim Farley, Ford’s group vice president of marketing, said in an interview. “This is something the dealers have been asking for for a long time.”

Saab Buyer Rejects 81 U.S. Stores

DETROIT -- Saab's new owner will reject 81 of Saab's 218 U.S. dealerships, General Motors Co. said (Thursday). GM said in a letter received by dealers (Thursday) that Saab's buyer, Swedish exclusive sportscar maker Koenigsegg, selected the surviving stores. Koenigsegg will operate the brand here through a new entity, Saab Cars North America Inc. “SCNA did make its selection of (go-forward) dealers based on our business plan and the needs of that plan,” (says Mike Colleran, COO of Saab Cars North America in Detroit.) “Essentially, we're looking for strong dealers who have good profitability and good throughput.”

GM to Announce 3rd-Quarter Earnings on Monday

DETROIT -- General Motors Co. said Tuesday that it will release its preliminary third-quarter earnings on Monday morning, the automaker's first earnings release since emerging from bankruptcy this summer. The company is not expected to make a profit but has hinted that its results for the quarter will show a big improvement over the same period last year. CEO Fritz Henderson and Chief Financial Officer Ray Young are expected to answer questions at a news conference about an hour after the numbers are released at 7 a.m.

Committed to Community: Mallon: Taking Kindness Coast to Coast

Auto dealers traditionally have been among the most generous donors to charities in their communities. In the mid-1970s, Bob Mallon, a Ford dealer in Tacoma, Wash., and a director of the National Automobile Dealers Association, wondered: What if NADA could channel those philanthropic urges nationwide? The result was the National Automobile Dealers Charitable Foundation. Since its creation in 1975, the foundation has raised more than $10 million in dealer contributions and donated that money to educational, health care and emergency relief programs across the country. Mallon says he is especially proud of the Ambassadors Program, which includes dealers who donate $10,000 to the foundation. In return, the foundation agrees to make a $1,500 grant to a charity of the ambassador's choice every three years -- forever.

Nov. 18 Webinar to Address New IRS Field Directive on UNICAP and What It Means for You!

NADA will present IRS Motor Vehicle Technical Advisor Terri Harris in a Webinar on the Uniform Capitalization Rules (UNICAP) directive on Wednesday, Nov. 18, from 1-3 p.m. EST. Here’s the background: On Sept. 15, the IRS Director for the Heavy Manufacturing and Transportation (HMT) Industry issued a memo that provides direction to IRS field examiners on how to conduct UNICAP audits at car and truck dealerships. The unofficial directive contains an audit toolkit and announces the suspension of new UNICAP audits through Dec. 31, 2010, to provide dealers with an opportunity to change their accounting methods in order to comply with a September 2007 Technical Advice Memorandum [TAM 200736026] that involved a franchised car dealer. The Industry Director issued the field directive to address the "high level of taxpayer noncompliance on this issue" and because it represents "the highest compliance risk" to the industry. So what does this mean for dealers?

NADA will tackle this issue in an interactive Webinar that will feature a powerpoint presentation by IRS advisor Terri Harris. The program will be moderated by Paul Metrey, director of NADA's Regulatory Affairs. About 30 to 60 minutes of the Webinar will be devoted to Q&A. Cost of the Webinar is only $199 per computer connection. Registrants will have access to the Webinar recording for up to six months. Register online at www.nada.org/seminars or call (800) 248-6232, ext. 7273.
