GM Says Auto Sales Rate May Be 10.8 Million in Sign of Recovery

General Motors Co. said U.S. auto sales in November may run at an annualized rate of 10.8 million vehicles, the third-highest total this year, in a sign of improving industry health. “Things are solidly looking up,” Susan Docherty, GM’s U.S. sales chief, said (Thursday) in a conference call with reporters. She said November sales for Detroit-based GM are on pace to rise 10 percent to 15 percent from a year earlier.

Chrysler Could Lose More Than 100 U.S. Dealerships

DETROIT -- More than 100 Chrysler Group LLC U.S. dealerships face possible closure if they cannot reach new financing deals with GMAC Financial Services or another lender, people involved in the process said on Thursday. Still, the automaker was "optimistic" all or nearly all of the dealerships would find financing for vehicle inventories and other expenses by the end of November whether through GMAC or other lenders, Chrysler spokeswoman Kathy Graham said. Graham said Chrysler had no plans to end franchise agreements with the dealerships, but the automaker could do little to save them if they could not find financing.

GM Says its U.S. Share May Rise for 4th Straight Month

DETROIT -- General Motors Co.'s U.S. market share may rise for the fourth straight month in November, the automaker's chief sales analyst said (Thursday). GM's share hit 21.1 percent in October, continuing a rise from 18.9 percent in July, when it exited a U.S.-directed bankruptcy. The automaker last month posted its first year-over-year sales gain since January 2008. "We're having a solid month," said (Mike DiGiovanni, executive director of global market and industry analysis).

Opinion: Give Dealers, as Well as Customers, What They Want
By Steve Finlay

Many people expect today’s auto dealers to give customers exactly what they want and need. There’s nothing wrong with that, theoretically. But the reality is auto makers often fail to meet dealers’ wants and needs, especially when it comes to inventory orders. That situation has improved somewhat in recent times, but auto makers still are wont to force unwanted inventory on dealers. Most egregiously that consists of duds that are hard to sell. Yet, modern customer-friendly standards preclude dealers from resorting to hard sells.
