Auto Sales May Rise 20% in U.S. on 'Enormous Pent-Up Demand'

U.S. auto sales will rise 20 percent in 2010, buoyed by pent-up demand and stronger credit markets, as the industry starts recovering from its worst year in almost three decades, a researcher said. Deliveries will climb to 12.4 million from 10.3 million in 2008, the Ann Arbor, Michigan-based Center for Automotive Research said (Tuesday). “No recession has ever been this long in terms of cumulative job loss,” Sean McAlinden, CAR’s chief economist, said at a briefing in Ypsilanti, Michigan. “Will we ever see the 17 million-sales levels we saw a few years ago? No, that was truly an automotive sales bubble.”

No Agreement Yet on Extending Estate Tax: Hoyer

WASHINGTON -- Democratic leaders in Congress have not yet reached an agreement to extend the estate tax before it expires at the end of the year, House Democratic Leader Steny Hoyer said on Tuesday. Lawmakers had hoped to ensure that the estate tax rate stay at 45 percent by attaching it to a must-pass defense spending bill, Hoyer said.

"We're working on that," Hoyer said at a news conference. "The estate tax is currently under discussion." The tax, which applies to estates valued at more than $3.5 million, is due to disappear at the end of 2009 due to a quirk in the law before rising to 55 percent in 2011 on assets above $1 million.

The House voted on December 3 to permanently extend current policy, but the Senate has not acted because the debate over healthcare reform has monopolized the upper chamber's attention. If lawmakers fail to act, the tax could disappear entirely for a year. That might be acceptable to liberal Democrats, who anticipate the higher rates of 2011, as well as to conservative Republicans, who want to eliminate the tax permanently.

Leasing Returns, but Bargain Rates Harder to Find

Vehicle leasing is resurging at a slow and measured pace, but wary automakers say it is unlikely to ever return to the madcap days when irresistibly low monthly rates drove up demand. "The financial markets are slowly recovering and there is a willingness of banks to lease now," said Paul Taylor, chief economist for the National Automobile Dealers Association. "They have decided this is one area of lending that it is safe to re-enter."
