Late Surge in Car Sales Raises Hopes for 2010

In recent days, sales have been brisk as auto makers stepped up incentive programs and took advantage of customers willing to buy without the aid of government rebates that spiked sales last summer. "We are seeing an increase across the board," said Michelle Krebs, a senior analyst at Edmunds.com, a car-buying Web site. She cited higher-than-expected gains at BMW AG, Ford Motor Co., Honda Motor Co., Toyota Motor Co.'s Lexus, and General Motor Co.'s soon-to-be-shuttered Saturn and Pontiac brands. Car makers are set to release December sales data on Tuesday.

Hyundai, Kia 2010 Sales to Jump 17% After Record Year

Hyundai Motor Co. and affiliate Kia Motors Corp. aim to increase sales 17 percent this year helped by new models and a global economic recovery. South Korea’s largest automakers are targeting combined sales of 5.4 million vehicles worldwide, Chairman Chung Mong Koo said in Seoul today in a New Year’s speech to employees. “We turned a crisis into an opportunity last year,” Chung told employees today. “We’ll leap into the position of a leading global automaker this year amid tougher competition.”

Soaring Used Car Prices Poised to Level Off in 2010

The nation's used car dealers have had to operate with about 8 million fewer used cars and trucks over the past two years, resulting in higher used vehicle prices every month in 2009, according to an analysis by the National Automobile Dealers Association. But an expected 15% rise in new vehicle sales this year could result in a flood of trade-ins, increasing the supply of used cars and helping to ease prices. "We'll start to see an ease to the used car shortage, but it will be several years before the supply returns to the average of the 1998-2007 period of strong new car sales," says Paul Taylor, the association's chief economist whose analysis is based on wholesale transaction prices.

GM Store Rehabs: Cash With Conditions

For remodeling money, dealers must follow rules
DETROIT -- In a new push to remodel dealerships, General Motors Co. is offering to help pay for the work -- with a catch or two. Dealers must follow GM's guidelines -- which require them to separate GM and non-GM brands, among other things. And the work should be finished in about three years. But GM will take five to 10 years to send the checks, which will be based on sales and not the cost of the upgrades.

Chrysler Sues 4 States Over Dealer Laws

Legal changes interfere with closings, violate bankruptcy code, Constitution, carmaker says
Chrysler LLC sued the Oregon Attorney General and officials in Maine, North Carolina and Illinois, saying recent changes to those states' dealer laws violate the bankruptcy code and the U.S. Constitution. Chrysler says the new laws interfere with the car company's rejection of 789 dealers as part of its sale to Italy's Fiat SpA. It seeks a court order declaring the laws unconstitutional and in conflict with a bankruptcy judges orders.
