U.S. Widens Toyota Probe to Electronics

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said Wednesday his agency is widening its probe of sudden acceleration complaints in Toyota Motor Corp. vehicles to look at the possibility of electromagnetic interference with electronic throttle systems, and said he wants to talk directly with company Chief Executive Akio Toyoda. The car industry could face a broader challenge because of Mr. LaHood's decision to have the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigate claims that electromagnetic interference could cause electronic throttle systems such as those used in many Toyota models to malfunction. That in turn could raise questions about the industry's wholesale move to computerized systems, done in part to meet fuel-efficiency requirements.

Toyota to Cover Costs for U.S. Dealers

DETROIT -- Toyota Motor Corp. has told its U.S. dealers they will be receiving checks from the auto maker to cover the cost of fixing cars recalled for faulty gas pedals and to ensure the dealers provide top customer service, a person familiar with the matter said. The amounts will range from $7,500 to $75,000, depending on how many cars dealerships sold last year, this person said. In a letter to owners of dealerships, Bob Carter, a Toyota group vice president, acknowledged dealers are running up additional costs to keep longer hours and add amenities to make it easier for customers to have the necessary repairs done, according to this person. "Within the next several days, you will receive a check from us (no strings attached) with a simple request -- 'do the right thing on behalf of Toyota customers,'" Mr. Carter said in the letter...

Toyota Dealers Extend Hours to Fix Faulty Pedals

DETROIT – Toyota's dealers, who have started to repair defective gas pedals in millions of U.S. vehicles, are extending hours, making house calls and offering other services as they try to repair the damage to Toyota's reputation. Toyota is sending dealers a piece of steel about the size of a postage stamp that can be inserted into the accelerator mechanism and eliminate the friction that causes the problem. Jim White Toyota, a dealership in Toledo, Ohio, received about 350 steel pieces, or shims, and began repairs Wednesday morning. By mid-afternoon, about 25 cars were fixed, said Terry Treter, service manager. "I'll stay until midnight," Treter said. "Whatever they want. I won't turn anyone away." Earl Stewart, who owns a dealership in North Palm Beach, Fla., is sending a repair van to the homes of customers for the first time, since some are too nervous to drive their vehicles to the dealership.

Toyota Says Prius Had Brake Design Problems

Toyota acknowledged design problems with the brakes in its prized Prius, adding to the catalog of safety woes at the Japanese automaker as it reels from massive global recalls involving faulty gas pedals. Toyota Motor Corp., which Thursday reported a $1.7 billion profit for last quarter, said it had corrected problems with the antilock brake system in Prius models sold since late last month, including those shipped overseas. But the company was still deciding what steps to take to fix the problem in Prius cars sold in Japan and overseas before late January. The Prius was not part of the recall spanning the U.S., Europe and China over sticking gas pedals in eight top-selling models including the Camry. That recall involved 2.3 million cars in the U.S. alone. Toyota for the first time gave an estimate of the costs of the global gas-pedal recall. The $2 billion total represents $1.1 billion for repairs and $770 million to $880 million in lost sales.
