GM Foundation, Dealers Accelerate Haiti Relief Efforts

DETROIT -- The General Motors Foundation announced (Wednesday) it is donating 30 GMC trucks for relief efforts in Haiti. The pickups are scheduled to arrive by mid-February. The trucks will assist victims and aid workers on the small island country that was devastated by a Jan. 12 earthquake. The death toll has exceeded 200,000 people -- far more than was originally thought, Haiti’s Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive said (Wednesday). The National Automobile Dealers Association also is sending trucks to Haiti after launching its 100 Trucks for Haiti campaign last Friday. Alan Starling, owner of Starling Chevrolet in St. Cloud, Fla., and president of Starling Auto Group, was the catalyst for the campaign. The former chairman of NADA heard about former President Bill Clinton’s Jan. 28 speech to the World Economic Conference in Davos, Switzerland, in which Clinton said that Haiti needed 100 light trucks “yesterday.”

In response, Starling helped organize NADA to ask its dealers for rough-terrain vehicles, small trucks, cargo trucks and pickup trucks -- new or used -- that will be delivered with the help of the Clinton-Bush Haiti Relief effort. The reason for those specific types of vehicles is they are more maneuverable and better suited to deliver food and supplies to the many regions on the small island, according to an NADA statement. David Hyatt, vice president of NADA public affairs, said that there is no cutoff time planned for the campaign because there is an ongoing need for the trucks and that NADA will not limit vehicle donations to 100. He said the more trucks that are contributed, the more effective the distribution of supplies will be. “The road to recovery in Haiti is long,” NADA Chairman John McEleney said in a statement, “but America’s new-car and -truck dealers can make a difference.” NADA is asking all dealers to e-mail trucks@clintonfoundation.org if they can make a tax-deductible contribution of a small, cargo or light pickup truck. Toyota President Toyoda Apologizes for Recall Crisis

Toyota Motor Corp.’s President Akio Toyoda apologized for the company’s growing recall crisis in his first public appearance since the company halted U.S. sales and production of its best-selling models last month. The company will set up a committee on quality control after recalls related to unintended acceleration have swollen to almost 8 million vehicles units worldwide, Toyoda, 53, grandson of the company’s founder, told reporters in Nagoya, Japan. “We aim to regain customer trust,” said Toyoda. “We should admit mistakes where they were made.”

Report: Toyota to Recall Prius Hybrid in US, Japan

TOKYO -- Toyota will recall 270,000 Prius hybrid vehicles over brake problems in the United States and Japan, a report said Friday, while the beleaguered auto giant launched an investigation into possible problems with the brakes in two more hybrids including the luxury Lexus. The recall would affect the new Prius hybrid model, and Toyota Motor Corp. would soon notify Japan's transport ministry and the U.S. Department of Transportation of the recall, Japan's top business newspaper, Nihon Keizai, said Friday.

U.S. Regulators Open Probe of 2010 Prius Brakes

WASHINGTON -- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened a formal investigation of the 2010 Toyota Prius Hybrid to determine whether the 37,000 vehicles suffer momentary loss of braking capability while traveling over bumpy surfaces. NHTSA, an agency that is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation, said in a statement that it has received 124 consumer complaints, including four reports of crashes and two of minor injuries. Some drivers have described the condition as "a brief lag in braking capability or a brief surge while braking," the government's statement said. The reports involve drives "over an uneven road surface, a pothole or a bump," it said. "Toyota will cooperate fully with NHTSA's investigation," spokeswoman Cindy Knight said in an e-mail.

Dealers Offer More Than a Quick Fix

Toyota and its dealers are pulling out the stops across North America and Europe to keep customers happy as they confront the challenge of repairing millions of cars and trucks recalled with defective accelerator pedals. John McEleney, chairman of the US National Automobile Dealers Association, said his Toyota dealership in Iowa was offering free car washes and topping up customers' petrol tanks "to try to make this a little less painful than it might have been otherwise". A dealership in St Louis is handing out free tickets to a nearby cinema multiplex while customers wait for their cars to be repaired. Thompson Toyota, near Philadelphia, has added an extra team of four technicians, extended its opening hours and will work a double shift on Saturday. It is also offering free rental cars, if needed.
