NADA Convention to Host Auto Dealers from More Than 30 Countries

ORLANDO, Fla. – The nation’s new-car and -truck dealers will convene in Orlando, Fla., this week for their annual convention, featuring industry-leading keynote speakers, more than a 100 workshop sessions and 465 allied-industry exhibits. It’s also an opportunity for dealers from around the globe to meet and share ideas. About 15,000 dealers, automaker executives, exhibitors, media and guests are expected to attend the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) Convention & Expo, Feb. 13-15, including more than 800 international dealers and reporters from 31 countries.

When Jaap Timmer, chairman of Euroda, (the European Opel/Vauxhall dealer organization) arrives in Orlando, it will mark his 17th consecutive convention since 1993. He’s also chairman of Cecra, the European federation consisting of 27 national professional associations representing the interests of motor trade and repair businesses and 13 European dealer councils. “The NADA convention gives me a lot of inspiration and motivation, and is always refreshing, especially in difficult times,” says Timmer, who looks forward to meeting colleagues, seeing the friends he’s made over the years and comparing the European and U.S. markets.

The top 10 countries, excluding the United States, with the largest number of dealers attending the NADA convention are: Canada, Australia, Brazil, United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Russian Federation, South Africa and Mexico. “We are pleased to see so many international dealers from so many countries coming to the convention,” says Brian Hamilton, NADA convention chairman and a GM and Chrysler dealer from Nebraska. For the second straight year, NADA will translate select workshops into Spanish, Portuguese and Italian.

Toyota Said to Plan Recall of Prius Hybrids in Japan This Week

Toyota Motor Corp. will recall its 2010 model Prius hybrid car in Japan this week to repair a problem with the vehicle’s braking system, two people familiar with the matter said, adding to global recalls of almost 8 million autos for separate defects. The world’s largest automaker plans to recall at least 270,000 of the gasoline-electric hatchbacks in Japan and the U.S., one person said, declining to be identified as the information isn’t yet public. Japan’s government ordered Toyota to investigate the Prius after receiving complaints from drivers. Toyota told U.S. dealers to expect an update early this week on steps the company plans to take to address the complaints, according to John Hanson, a spokesman for the carmaker’s sales unit in the country.

Toyota Dealers Work to Fix Recalled Models

Auto dealers over the weekend began repairing cars recalled by Toyota Motor Corp. for faulty gas pedals, extending their services hours in a bid to get customers back on the road and limit the damage to the car maker's name. At Shepherd Team Auto Plaza in Fort Scott, Kan., General Manager Robert Tersinar said his store has turned its full attention to fixing vehicles. Some potential customers have called asking about deals on a new vehicle, and he said he is hopeful customers will come back once the sales halt is lifted. Toyota last week rolled out generous incentive deals to help minimize the impact of the recall on sales. "Having substantially more incentives gives us a shot in the arm—I think it's needed," said John McEleney, president of Southgate Motors in Clinton, Iowa.

Toyota Recall Makes Waves Throughout the Industry; How Will It End?

McLEAN, Va. — Analysts from NADA Used Car Guide attempted to find some clarity in both the wholesale and retail markets in connection with the ongoing Toyota turmoil. Though part of the analysis still was inconclusive, it did reveal some above average softness in wholesale prices on newer Toyota units from the 2008 and 2009 model years. "Toyota must act quickly and create a confident and consistent message to consumers to mitigate the long term damage to the brand," stressed Jonathan Banks, senior director of editorial and data services for NADA Used Car Guide. "If Toyota's perception is permanently damaged, this premium significantly increases their downside risk in resale performance," he continued. Banks said that he's not anticipating a crisis in resale performance for Toyota. However, he did indicate that he's incorporated downward adjustments in March forecasts.

Editor's Note: Jonathan Banks will present his insights and key data on used-vehicle pricing and market trends, as well as an outlook for the year ahead, during a news conference with NADA Chief Economist Paul Taylor at NADA's 93rd annual Convention & Exposition in Orlando on Sunday, Feb. 14, at 12 p.m. Taylor will also deliver his new-vehicle sales forecast and economic outlook for the year ahead.

Penske Gives $1 Million in Trucks to Haiti Relief

DETROIT -- Penske Corp. donated more than $1 million worth of diesel-powered flatbed trucks to the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, adding to the growing number of trucks being given on behalf of the automobile industry for Haiti relief efforts. “I'm pleased the Penske Corporation has stepped up to donate more than $1 million worth of trucks, which will be instrumental in mobilizing food and lifesaving supplies in Haiti,” former President Bill Clinton said in a statement. Penske Corp.,'s contribution follows the General Motors Foundation's pledge on Wednesday to send 30 GMC trucks to Haiti. And the National Automobile Dealers Association announced Jan. 29 its 100 Trucks for Haiti campaign, which will be delivered with the help of the Clinton-Bush Haiti relief effort.
