NADA Issues Statement Regarding Congressional Hearings on the Toyota Recall

House committee hearing is rescheduled for 10 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 24
McLEAN, Va. – John McEleney, chairman of the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA), issued the following statement today regarding the upcoming congressional hearings on the Toyota recall:

“NADA recognizes the important oversight role of Congress. However, we urge the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, as it works responsibly to look into the facts surrounding the Toyota recall, not to give countenance to any unsubstantiated rhetoric which has the effect of unjustifiably alarming the public about the Toyota brand.

“Recalls are quite common in the auto industry and involve virtually every manufacturer at one time or another. We urge all government officials, whether in Congress or the Administration, to be careful what they say while the investigation goes forward. It’s important not to rush to judgment. Ill-advised comments reverberate through the entire American buying public, impacting auto dealerships, their employees and our local and national economy.

“For years Toyota has been a leader in producing quality automobiles, and Toyota dealers are among the best in the industry. It has been our experience over many years that Toyota places customer safety as its first priority, just as we do. We are convinced that this is a problem for which Toyota engineers have developed the proper remedy. Toyota dealers are opening extra hours, 24/7 in some cases, to fix the vehicles involved in the recall.”

Editor's note: Because of inclement weather set to impact the Washington area tonight and tomorrow, Chairman Edolphus “Ed” Towns, D-N.Y., and Ranking Member Darrell Issa, R-Calif., have rescheduled the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform hearing titled: “Toyota Gas Pedals: Is the Public at Risk?” The hearing was rescheduled for 10 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 24. Pressure Mounts on Toyota Amid Recall

The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform (has rescheduled hearings to begin Wednesday, Feb. 24, that will look) into regulatory oversight of Toyota and problems at the carmaker that have led to the recall of more than 8 million vehicles worldwide. Toyota has already retained two additional Washington-based public relations and lobbying firms to help with congressional requests and hearings. Meanwhile, the House Energy and Commerce Committee is beginning to examine documents and statements from Toyota and government officials. The lobbying trade association for automobile dealers said it is working with Toyota to make sure the faulty parts are replaced as quickly as possible. “Dealers have been focused like a laser, performing these repairs as quickly as possible,” said Bailey Wood, a spokesman for the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA).

Toyota Announces Global Recall of More than 400,000 Prius, Other Hybrid Cars

TOKYO -- Toyota on Tuesday announced another global recall -- this time, more than 400,000 Prius and other hybrid cars with braking problems, as a quality crisis continues to curse the carmaker that built its global reputation on quality. Toyota President Akio Toyoda used extraordinary language at a press conference here to apologize for quality and safety issues that have led to the recall of more than 7 million vehicles in recent months. He repeated three times that Toyota was neither failure-proof nor "omnipotent," and he said that his company would now "redouble our commitment to quality as the lifeline of our company." The recall will fix a software glitch in the brakes of the Prius and three other hybrid models.

Opinion: Toyota's Plan to Repair Its Public Image
By Akio Toyoda

More than 70 years ago, Toyota entered the auto business based on a simple, but powerful, principle: that Toyota would build the highest-quality, safest and most reliable automobiles in the world. The company has always put the needs of our customers first and made the constant improvement of our vehicles a top priority. That is why 80 percent of all Toyotas sold in the United States over the past 20 years are still on the road today. When consumers purchase a Toyota, they are not simply purchasing a car, truck or van. They are placing their trust in our company. The past few weeks, however, have made clear that Toyota has not lived up to the high standards we set for ourselves. More important, we have not lived up to the high standards you have come to expect from us. I am deeply disappointed by that and apologize. As the president of Toyota, I take personal responsibility. That is why I am personally leading the effort to restore trust in our word and in our products.
