Toyota Recalls Spark Frenzy

Toyota Motors Sales U.S.A. Inc.’s latest recalls have dealers pleading for calm... “Recalls are quite common in the auto industry and involve virtually every manufacturer at one time or another,” says (John) McEleney, (chairman of the National Automobile Dealers Assn.,) who also is a Toyota dealer. “We urge all government officials, whether in Congress or the Administration, to be careful what they say while the investigation goes forward. Ill-advised comments reverberate through the entire American buying public, impacting auto dealerships, their employees and our local and national economy.” McEleney’s remarks are part of a statement issued as the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform reschedules its hearing titled: Toyota Gas Pedals: Is the Public at Risk? Inclement weather forces legislators to set the hearing, originally scheduled for Feb. 10, for Feb. 24.

Toyota Recalls More Vehicles

NHTSA questions company about safety of Corollas; congressional hearing delayed
WASHINGTON -- Toyota Motor Corp. recalled 437,000 vehicles worldwide Tuesday, including its flagship Prius hybrid, over braking issues. The Japanese automaker, which is facing a mounting public relations crisis, has now recalled 9 million vehicles worldwide over unintended acceleration claims that it says could cost it $2 billion in the second half of the Japanese fiscal year running to the end of March. On Tuesday, the company took dozens of employees and dealers to Capitol Hill to explain how Toyota is working to fix recalled vehicles and quickly respond to quality concerns. Toyota North America President Yoshimi Inaba was in Washington on Tuesday to prepare for the hearings that were delayed by snow. The National Automobile Dealers Association urged Congress on Tuesday not to overreact. NADA Chairman John McEleney, a Toyota dealer, urged Congress not engage in "unsubstantiated rhetoric which has the effect of unjustifiably alarming the public about the Toyota brand."

Toyota Corolla Complaints Being Reviewed By U.S.

Toyota Motor Corp.’s Corolla, the world’s best-selling car, is being reviewed by the U.S. after driver complaints about steering, according to a government spokeswoman. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recorded more than 80 complaints about Corolla steering for 2009 and 2010 models, according to the agency’s online database. “We are reviewing steering complaints with the Corolla,” Karen Aldana, a spokeswoman for the agency, said in an e-mail. NHTSA wants “to determine if a safety defect investigation is warranted, as is standard procedure with all complaints.”

Honda Expands Airbag Inflation Recall

DETROIT -- Honda Motor Co. is adding more than 378,000 cars to an existing safety recall for air bag inflation problems, the company said Tuesday. The company will replace the driver's side air bag inflator on the cars because they can deploy with too much pressure, causing the inflator to rupture and injure or kill the driver. The recall now affects more than 822,000 vehicles, including certain 2001 and 2002 Accord sedans, Civic compacts, Odyssey minivans, CR-V small sport utility vehicles and some 2002 Acura TL sedans. Honda says owners should take their vehicles to dealerships as soon as they are notified by the company in writing. Notification will begin during the month of February.

Recovery in a Low Gear

Auto imports are moving, if only off port terminal lots, driving car carriers’ confidence higher for 2010
There’s room to park around the Port of Baltimore, and that’s a good sign for shipping. “Our car business is back,” said Steven Rand, president and CEO of Amports, an auto processor that operates four facilities around Baltimore and has processing facilities at nine other U.S. ports. “We’re expecting a slow, steady recovery in the trade this year.” Like many who follow the auto industry, Rand expects auto imports to bounce back by 10 to 15 percent this year.

“We’re going to start importing more cars as the economy grows. We always do,” (said Paul Taylor, chief economist at the National Automobile Dealers Association.) Taylor thinks imports will gain an even greater market share this year if the dollar continues to gain strength. ”There will be pricing advantages for imported cars,” he said. Conversely, the strengthening of the dollar could further weaken U.S. auto exports, which were hit hard by the global economic slump. “It’s very slow, although we see some minor improvement,” he said. “The Detroit Three are exporting more this year as the export market comes back, but I don’t see the volumes in Europe coming back that much.” He sees some growth in direct shipments to China, which became the world’s largest automobile market in 2009, with sales of light vehicles reaching nearly 13 million, far above U.S. sales of 10.4 million.
