Orlando will host more than 15,000 automotive dealers, executives, exhibitors and other guests at the 2010 National Automobile Dealers Association Convention & Expo from Feb. 13-15. The event includes workshop sessions, panel discussions and more focused on the future of auto retailing. “With 19 franchise meetings scheduled, 108 workshop sessions to choose from and more than 465 companies exhibiting on the expo floor, this is a ‘must-attend’ convention,” said Brian Hamilton, NADA convention chairman and a General Motors and Chrysler dealer from Nebraska. The event will be held at the Orange County Convention Center and is expected to have more than $31 million in economic impact for Central Florida.

GM Reminds Dealers About 1st Impressions

Renovation is a likely subject at convention
ORLANDO -- General Motors executives are to meet here this weekend with hundreds of independent dealers as they try to mend relationships and answer questions about the automaker's efforts to encourage them to renovate stores and improve online marketing, employee training and customer-retention programs. GM will be meeting with its dealers this weekend as thousands of dealers convene in Orlando for the annual National Automobile Dealers Association convention. Steve Hill, GM general manager of retail sales support, ... said GM is focusing on four areas with its dealers: improving facilities, training, digital marketing and customer retention. "The spirit of this program is cooperation," Hill said.

J.D. Power Sees Positive Year Ahead for Automakers

ORLANDO -- The U.S. retail auto market could rise by 1 million units this year thanks to a loosening of consumer credit and automakers making a gradual return to leasing, according to a J.D. Power & Associates industry forecast. The firm raised its U.S. retail forecast for the year to 9.6 million vehicles, up from 8.6 million vehicles sold last year. "Credit has come a long way, but it's got a long way to go," Jeff Schuster, J.D. Power's executive director of automotive forecasting, said during a speech (Thursday) at the National Automobile Dealers Association convention.

Toyota Chief Plans U.S. Trip as Congress Seeks Answers

TOKYO/DETROIT -- Toyota Motor said on Friday its embattled head is planning a U.S. trip early next month but would not confirm whether he would attend congressional hearings probing the automaker's safety recalls. U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa, the top Republican on the House Oversight and Government committee, is pressing his case to get Akio Toyoda to testify before a congressional committee, saying he would support a subpoena to force his appearance. Toyota spokeswoman Mieko Iwasaki in Tokyo said the company was making arrangements for Toyoda to make a trip to the United States in early March, but she declined to comment on whether he would attend the U.S. congressional hearings. Issa invited Toyoda to testify and suggested another hearing could be held if the automaker's top executive could not make the February 24 session as scheduled. Hearings are also planned for February 25 and March 2.

Chrysler Asserts Right to Contest Dealer Arbitration

WASHINGTON -- Although Chrysler Group has indicated it would not challenge the new law that sets up arbitration for rejected dealerships, the automaker said in an arbitration case this week that it reserves the right to contest the legislation “on constitutional or any other appropriate grounds.” The Chrysler assertion is in a so-called answering statement that responds to Colorado dealer Yale King’s notice that he intends to file for arbitration. “Chrysler seems to be hedging its bets,” said King’s lawyer, Craig Allely of Denver. “I am concerned that it is attempting to reserve to itself the right to challenge the constitutionality or legality of the entire process established by Congress.”

A Good Time to Buy a Toyota?

A barrage of bad news about Toyota, including safety recalls for unintended acceleration and for a braking problem with the 2010 Prius, may be a boon for contrarian consumers seeking deals from an automaker that doesn’t ordinarily offer deep discounts. In an effort to spur sales, Toyota has increased incentives, offering as much as $1,000 cash back, or more, on about a dozen models. The offers vary by region; in the New York area, the Yaris subcompact is currently offered at a $1,000 discount. The company also recently announced zero percent financing for 60 months on particular models, including, in some regions, the popular Camry and Corolla. That move pleased dealers like John McEleney, president of McEleney Toyota in Clinton, Iowa. “I am sure it was a reaction to all the problems, the publicity and the issues they are having,” said Mr. McEleney, a Toyota dealer for 36 years. Even before the zero percent offer, Toyota dealers were eager to strike a bargain, Mr. McEleney said. “When you have fewer people coming in the door there is a natural tendency to make every deal as attractive as you can,” he said.
