US Traffic-Death Decline Could Harm Auto-Safety Bill Passage

WASHINGTON — Opponents of a wide-ranging U.S. auto-safety bill are seizing on a batch of recent government reports to try to sink, or at least damp, the proposed legislation when lawmakers return to Capitol Hill this month. (Read more)

Editor's Note: The House version of the “Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 2010” (H.R. 5381) includes an additional tax on new cars and light trucks for vehicle safety purposes. The proposed tax would increase every year with inflation. However, Congress is not required to spend the funds on vehicle safety. NADA supports an amendment offered by Rep. Stephen Scalise (R-La.) to strike the new vehicle tax.

Chrysler Sets February Deadline for Dealers to Open Fiat Showrooms in U.S.

Chrysler Group LLC, the automaker run by Fiat SpA, said dealers who want to sell the Fiat 500 subcompact car in the U.S. should have their new showrooms completed and running by the end of February. (Read more)

Toyota Says Electric RAV4 Will Be Shown in November

A rechargeable Prius should be available by June 2012, and the all-electric RAV4 compact SUV will be marketed in the U.S. the same year, Toyota Executive Vice President Takeshi Uchiyamada told reporters yesterday in Detroit. (Read more)
