Fine led to DEC decision, Tom Walsh is told

In a rare decision, the president of the Detroit Economic Club has canceled a speech that was scheduled for next Tuesday by Steven Rattner, former head of President Barack Obama's auto industry task force. "I made the decision," DEC President Beth Chappell told the Free Press. "When you accept a multimillion-dollar fine from the SEC, it doesn't seem appropriate to have him speak here." (Read more)

Car companies have raised enough questions about what they view as burdensome new regulation to slow safety bills pushed by Democrats. Now they hope expected gains by more business-friendly Republicans in the November 2 congressional elections, and the fading memory of unintended acceleration in some Toyota and Lexus models, will effectively kill sweeping proposals. The “Aftermarket Zone” at the 2011 NADA Convention & Expo in San Francisco has sold out. The “Aftermarket Zone,” which has doubled in size since debuting at the 2010 convention, will showcase 15 companies in more than 8,000 square feet of booth space. “These companies will highlight products and services that can help dealerships grow their businesses in the aftermarket arena,” says Steve Pitt, NADA vice president of conventions and expositions. The convention workshop program will also offer an Aftermarket session to show dealers how to incorporate an aftermarket program into their business plan and meet the growing needs of their customers.
