Government Proposing That Many Trucks Improve Efficiency

Editor's Note: NADA looks forward to reviewing the NHTSA/EPA fuel economy proposal for model year 2014-2018 medium- and heavy-duty trucks, which will be released later today. A national program is essential to prevent an unworkable patchwork of state-by-state mandates. Importantly, these first ever truck regulations will govern how new trucks and trailers are built for sale. Thus, it will be critical that they be technologically feasible and economically practical, resulting in commercial fleets that businesses will want to buy, at prices they can afford. If not, truck dealers, their employees and the economy in general will suffer, without any environmental or national security benefits.

New Car Sales Starting to Climb

Ed Tonkin, chairman of the (National Automobile Dealers Association), said one positive sign for the industry is that the NADA’s annual convention in San Francisco in February is attracting more interest. “I’m pleased to say that the Expo is already sold out and a waiting list is growing,” he said. Austin, Texas, dealer Nyle Maxwell will deliver Fiat 500s to customers on an elevated runway modeled on those found in the fashion houses of Milan, Italy. Joe Laham was so excited about Fiat, he gambled and paid $1 million for a parcel of land next to his existing Chrysler Group store in Hyannis, Mass., where he'll build a Fiat dealership from the ground up.
