Dealer Ranks in House Double, to 6; All GOP

WASHINGTON -- Auto dealers had a string of legislative victories during the first two years of the Obama administration, and they will have a few more allies in Congress in January. Three of the four current and former dealers bidding to unseat Democratic incumbents in the House of Representatives swept into office on the national Republican wave. Their election will increase the number of dealers or former dealers in the House to a record six -- twice as many as in the current Congress, according to NADA.

Mileage Rules Prompt Backlash

WASHINGTON -- Auto makers and car dealers, emboldened by rising profits and a more business-friendly Congress, say they will fight the Obama administration's proposal to boost average new-car fuel economy to as much as 62 miles a gallon by 2025. NADA warned that the "economic risks associated with such speculation are simply too great," and that the proposal could lead to job losses. (Read more)

Editor's note: In Nov. 1 comments to NHTSA and EPA, NADA questioned the plan to implement new fuel economy mandates on a rushed timetable given the risks of using insufficient data, inappropriate assumptions and forecasts and questionable analysis. Given those uncertainties and the fact that automakers have no more than a vague idea of the fleets they intend to build in 2025, setting standards so far in the future is tantamount to a shot in the dark that – if wrong – will result in job losses and economic inefficiencies.

Lobbyists See Start of Auto-Friendly GOP Era

WASHINGTON -- The new Republican majority in the House will investigate, slow and try to block Obama administration initiatives that it considers detrimental to the auto industry, lobbyists predicted. "There will be much more oversight, and the process will slow down," said Bailey Wood, a lobbyist for the National Automobile Dealers Association. (Read more)

The Best Thing about October's Strong Auto Sales: Consumers Led the Way

The slow-motion auto sales recovery may have reached a turning point -- and not just because of the healthy 13 percent October increase and the fact that the annual selling rate was the best since the heady cash-for-clunkers days of the summer of 2009. It's because -- for the first time this year -- retail customers rather than fleet buyers drove the gains. (Read more)
