TD Deal Seen as a Boon for U.S. Auto Market

Toronto-Dominion Bank's purchase of Chrysler Financial will open a new avenue of financing for U.S. dealers and could help stoke the still-developing recovery in auto sales. TD Bank's $6.3 billion purchase of Chrysler Financial will make the Canadian bank one of North America's largest auto lenders. It also signals a renewed competition to provide loans for vehicle purchases and leases and the floorplan financing that allow dealers to keep inventory on site. "I don't think it could be anything but good because it always helps us when there are more players in the game to go forward and do financing with us," said Chuck Eddy, who owns a Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep dealership in Youngstown, Ohio.

2010 U.S. Auto Sales Are Peaking in December, Oddly Enough

U.S. auto sales for 2010 are ending on an unusually strong note in December, thanks to an uptick in truck sales and luxury cars. The painfully slow U.S. economic recovery is boosting December auto sales, but the car companies are also doing it the old fashioned way, with year-end discounts. Yet J.D. Power and Associates expects December sales at a seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of about 12.4 million cars and trucks. For the full year, that implies U.S. auto sales for 2010 of about 11.6 million, up from 10.4 million in 2009.

Hyundai, VW Top Insurance Industry Safe Car List

WASHINGTON -- The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recognized 66 vehicles on Wednesday with its "top safety pick award" for the 2011 model year, the most-ever awarded by the Virginia-based group. The number was more than double the 27 vehicles selected last year. Hyundai Motor Corp. and its affiliate Kia Motors Corp., and Volkswagen AG and its Audi brand received the most awards with nine, followed by eight awards apiece by General Motors Co., Ford Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Corp.

GM CEO Akerson Said to Aim for Tripling Electric-Car Sales Goal

General Motors Co. Chief Executive Officer Dan Akerson is looking to at least triple the company’s target for electric-car sales by expanding the market for the Chevrolet Volt and adding models that would share similar technology, said three people familiar with his plan. GM has said it expects to sell 10,000 Volts in 2011 and 45,000 the following year, when capacity may reach 60,000. Dave Darovitz, a GM spokesman, said GM will look at other models for the Volt system. He declined to comment on Akerson’s volume goals for the technology.

Value Added: Gary Bargamian Doesn't Let Illness Keep Him from the Showroom Floor
By Thomas Heath

Last week, at the request of a friend of mine, I visited (Robert Fogarty's) dealership (in Silver Spring, Md.) to meet a salesman named Gary Bargamian. Bargamian is 51, smart, fun, a "Godfather" fanatic like myself, stuck in a wheelchair - and so loved by his co-workers that I wish I sold cars for Sport Chevrolet. Bargamian can't speak or do much else with his body because of a neuromuscular disease. So, with blinks of his eye (I am not kidding), he pounds out messages on a keyboard displayed on a futuristic computer. His body may be weak, but his sales are strong, which makes me wonder whether his boss ... is a saint or a smart businessman who doesn't want to lose a great salesman. I think a little of both.
