GM Again Shuffles Top Ranks

New Product Chief to Come From Inside; CEO Akerson Impatient for Improvement.

General Motors Co. is replacing its head of product development, a move aimed at shoring up what Chief Executive Dan Akerson has identified as a key trouble spot. The car maker plans to put a company insider in the role, said a person familiar with the matter, replacing product guru Tom Stephens, who is moving into a new position. Mr. Stephens, who will remain a vice chairman, will take on the newly created role of global chief technology officer, where he will work to develop new automotive technology and oversee research and development, GM said Wednesday. Also Tuesday, GM announced that Chris Perry, who had run the Chevrolet brand, would become head of U.S. marketing. Last month, the CEO created a global marketing position and moved former U.S. marketing chief Joel Ewanick, who joined GM last year from Hyundai Motor Co., into the elevated role.

EPA, Chrysler Work on Hybrid Engines for Minivans

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Chrysler and the Environmental Protection Agency are trying to adapt an engine technology invented by the EPA to improve gas mileage in minivans. The company and the government agency said Wednesday they're working to fit the EPA's hydraulic hybrid system into Chrysler minivans. If it works, the system could boost minivan mileage 35 percent to around 27 miles per gallon. Currently the top Chrysler minivan gets 20 mpg in combined city and highway driving. The agreement was announced as Chrysler and other auto companies seek new technologies to help to meet stricter government fuel economy regulations that call for a fleet average of 35.5 miles per gallon by 2016, nearly 10 miles per gallon more than now.

BMW, Audi to Expand Factories This Year as Record Sales Constrain Capacity

Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, Daimler AG and Audi AG, the world’s three largest luxury-car makers, will expand factories this year to ease capacity constraints driven by record demand for their vehicles. Volkswagen AG’s Audi, vying to top BMW as the world’s bigger maker of premium vehicles by 2015, said (Wednesday) it will increase production to build more cars and SUVs in 2011 than the 1.15 million produced in 2010. “The top three are poised for further growth,” said Juergen Pieper, a Frankfurt-based analyst with Bankhaus Metzler who recommends buying VW, Daimler and BMW shares. “The momentum in luxury markets will continue this year and also in 2012. It’s a necessity for manufacturers to take steps to address this."
