NADA to Testify Before House Subcommittee on Perils of Multiple Fuel Economy Standards

Alabama new-car dealer and NADA board of directors member Forrest McConnell will testify before the U.S. House Subcommittee on Energy and Power, telling members that a redundant set of three fuel-economy standards could hurt auto sales by increasing costs and restricting vehicle availability—directly affecting the nation’s fragile economic recovery and hurting job creation. McConnell will urge Congress to return to a single standard that takes into account national factors, such as jobs, safety and consumer demand as it will more effectively increase fuel savings, enhance economic growth and protect the environment. A Webcast of the hearing will be available on the Energy and Commerce Committee's Web site just prior to 1 p.m. Eastern.

Carmakers Focus on Green Power as Fuel Costs Rise

GENEVA -- Just when carmakers thought it safe to roll out new models in the wake of the economic crisis - 170 premiers are advertised for the Geneva Auto Show opening this week - a spike in fuel prices has cast a new shadow over the industry and redoubled attention on green technologies. Although most carmakers are showing upbeat signs of recovery, the key theme at the auto show, as during the financial crisis years, will once again be fuel efficiency. "We'll see a lot of alternative powertrains, which will get a lot of attention given the current oil prices. No one knows where that is going to go, especially given what is going on in the Middle East," said Ian Fletcher, analyst at IHS automotive.

Honda Tops Magazine's 2011 Car Rankings

Honda Motor Co. and several other Asian auto makers scored high marks in a series of new studies and rankings of new cars by Consumer Reports magazine. Ford Motor Co. was the only one of the three Detroit auto makers to make it into the top 10 in the publication's annual auto maker score card for 2011, which was released on Monday. General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group LLC were placed twelfth and thirteenth out of 13 auto makers ranked in the April issue of the magazine. Among other auto makers, Toyota Motor Corp. managed to keep its scores near the top of the rankings, despite the recall and quality troubles it has suffered in the past year. European car companies including BMW AG and Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz performed well in comfort and overall ride but lost points due to weak ratings for reliability, Consumer Reports said.

Toyota February Recall Is Unlikely to Derail Carmaker's U.S. Sales Rebound

Toyota Motor Corp.’s February U.S. sales gain may be its second-biggest since last year’s record recalls, even after the world’s largest carmaker said it will have to fix more flawed vehicles. The automaker may report a 27 percent increase in deliveries of Toyota, Lexus and Scion cars and light trucks for the month, based on the average of four analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg. Toyota and other automakers will release February sales results today. Industrywide deliveries are likely to rise 19 percent from a year earlier, the average of five analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg, as rising consumer confidence spurs buying. Confidence among U.S. consumers increased in February to the highest in three years, according to separate reports from the Conference Board and Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan last week.

Ford Struggles to Build Enough Explorers ...

DETROIT -- Ford Motor Co. says it will end February with its inventory of 2011 Explorers at only 60 percent of what it had expected. “The sales levels are not letting us get the inventory up,” said George Pipas, Ford’s chief sales analyst, during a media briefing today as the industry prepares to release February U.S. sales results on Tuesday. Ford had expected to end February with about 5,000 Explorers in stock, Pipas said, adding: “I’ll be lucky if we have 3,000 in stock at the end of February.” That’s about a 14-day supply, he said. “They are flying out as fast as you go,” said (Mitchell Dale, owner of McRee Ford of Dickinson, Texas.) “Unless Ford adds some additional production, I don’t see us having availability much at all for the next six months or so.”
