Michigan Delegation to Meet, Consider Joining Fuel Economy Fight

As the fight over fuel economy standards intensifies, a large bipartisan group of Michigan’s congressional delegation will meet Wednesday to decide whether to publicly join the fray, the [Detroit] Free Press has learned. Michigan’s members of Congress have largely remained silent in public as the White House has negotiated with automakers and other parties over vehicle fuel efficiency targets for 2017 to 2025. But automakers have voiced strong opposition to a 56 m.p.g. target, and this week escalated their public resistance by launching radio ads in Michigan and six other key auto-producing states.

GM Restarts Volt Production

General Motors Co. said [Tuesday] it had restarted production of its extended range electric Chevrolet Volt earlier this week. After about a month of halted production, GM's Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant has begun production of its 2012 Volt, said Rob Peterson, a GM spokesman. The plant is now producing 2012 Volt models at about three times the rate of earlier production, he said. There are fewer than 100 2011 Volts on dealer lots, and only 1 in 9 Chevrolet dealers that sells the Volt has one for sale, he said.

Toyota released a statement [Thursday] denying the rumor and has confirmed that the RAV4 EV will be available to everyone. The automaker didn't provide an exact date on when we could expect the new all-electric RAV4, but it should arrive in showrooms by 2012. In addition to the RAV4 EV, Toyota will also release an EV version of the upcoming Scion iQ mini car. The RAV4 EV, which debuted at last year's Los Angeles International Auto Show, is a product of the collaboration between Toyota and Tesla Motors.

Group 1 Turns to eBay's Daily Deals to Push Vehicles

Last week, eBay’s Daily Deal website featured more than the normal electronics, home goods and accessories one might expect to find. Deal hunters browsing the site were exposed to deeply discounted vehicles, as well. Trying something new, Group 1 Automotive listed 28 vehicles on the site, including a Chevrolet Corvette offered for $60,305, a price which lands 15 percent below the vehicle’s sticker price. Participating Group 1 dealerships included stores in Oklahoma and Texas, featuring the Chevrolet, Toyota, Nissan and Honda brands.
