Obama to Announce New Fuel Economy Standards Friday

The Obama administration has reached a compromise with automakers on the target for significantly boosting fuel efficiency for cars and light-duty vehicles by 2025, ending months of negotiations on this pivotal mandate for the auto industry. Automaker fleets will have to average 54.5 miles a gallon by 2025, according to a source familiar with the plan. U.S. President Barack Obama will officially announce the new guidelines on Friday, the White House said. Ford Motor Co spokeswoman Meghan Keck said there are still some issues that need to worked out regarding the new standards. "We continue to believe that the talks are productive, that there are a couple of details that we're still ironing out and that we hope to be able say more soon," Keck said.

Hyundai Motor Profit Rises 37% After Earthquake Disrupts Toyota, Honda

Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea’s largest carmaker, had a 37 percent gain in second-quarter profit as the company increased production to fill the void left by disruptions at Japanese rivals. Sales advanced 19 percent to 20 trillion won, led by fuel- efficient models including Elantra and Accent. Hyundai Motor has no plans to increase incentives in the U.S. and aims to increase premium model sales in the market, [Hyundai Chief Financial Officer Won-Hee Lee] said. In China, the carmaker sees demand for mid-sized sedans and sport-utility vehicles rising in the world’s biggest auto market, Lee said.

AutoNation Second-Quarter Profit Jumps 52% on Slight Sales Gain

AutoNation Inc., which operates 254 new vehicle franchises in 15 states, said net income rose 52% to $71.9 million in the second quarter compared with the same period a year earlier. The price spike is a result of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami in March, which upended auto production internationally by slashing the supply of auto parts needed to manufacture cars and shuttering factories. That slashed the availability of many cars, especially Toyotas and Hondas, and dealers began to raise prices, said Mike Jackson, AutoNation's chief executive. "This is momentary. As the Japanese shipments improve during the third quarter, these margins won't be as strong," Jackson said.

GM Volt Supply Poised to Surge in Race With Nissan's Leaf

General Motors Co., trailing Nissan Motor Co. in electric-car sales, plans to boost output of its Chevrolet Volt to 5,000 a month as the automaker seeks to seize the lead and test consumers’ hunger for plug-in vehicles. Nissan is winning this year, selling 3,875 of the Leaf in the U.S. to GM’s 2,745 Volt sales. While Nissan accelerated production faster than GM, the Detroit automaker will outstrip its Japanese rival and make 5,000 of the Volt a month as soon as January, Tony Posawatz, the director of the vehicle line, said in an interview. At today’s production levels, both vehicles are in short supply and the automakers have thousands of consumers on waiting lists. It’s still unknown whether customers ultimately prefer a pure electric car like the Leaf or a plug-in hybrid like the Volt that can travel longer distances, and how many people are willing to pay for the gas-saving technology.

Nissan: Facebook May Replace Phone Banks

Consumers are changing how they look for information, and that could force Nissan North America Inc. to move operators out of phone banks and onto the Internet. "Currently, our social media staff can handle the volume of questions and problems that are showing up on Web sites," said Erich Marx, Nissan's director of marketing communications, responsible for social media. But he believes the number of people asking questions on Nissan's Facebook page or venting about a complaint could double over the next year. "We will need to rethink the staffing that we have." That could mean shifting some employees out of Nissan's traditional consumer affairs operations, including its multiple toll-free call centers, so they can monitor sites such as Facebook and the Web pages for Nissan's individual nameplates. No changes have been proposed yet.
