President, Automakers Hail New Fuel Efficiency Pact

President Barack Obama said Friday the deal cut between his administration and major automakers, increasing fuel efficiency standards to 54.5 mpg by 2025, will save consumers $1.7 trillion over the lifetime of those vehicles. In announcing the pact, Obama was joined by 13 automakers, including representatives of Detroit's Big Three, Toyota Motor Corp., BMW AG, Honda Motor Co., Nissan Motor Co. and Hyundai Motor Co. Volkswagen AG and Daimler AG aren't on board with the deal, and didn't participate in Friday's event in Washington. Despite repeated questioning, administration officials offered no estimate on the plan's costs to automakers or consumers, nor the impact on jobs or auto sales. Previously, the administration said more aggressive requirements, higher than the 54.5 mpg compromise reached by the government and automakers, could cost $2,100 per vehicle by 2025.

The Coming Year-End Share War

As stock rebuilds from Japan's disaster, dealers expect scads of ads and big incentives

As supplies of Japanese-brand vehicles start to return to normal, U.S. car dealers expect automakers to spend hundreds of millions more on incentives and advertising in an attempt to salvage 2011. Inventories have grown in recent weeks, but some retailers say they still have only half their normal supplies of Japanese-brand cars and trucks because of the catastrophic March earthquake. "You will see one hell of a manufacturers' price war for final 2011 market share" if vehicle inventories and the supply pipeline reach pre-earthquake levels before Dec. 1, predicts David Wilson, president of the big David Wilson Automotive Group in Orange, Calif.

Honda Raises Full Year Net Income Forecast by 18% on Faster Quake Recovery

Honda Motor Co., Japan’s third-largest carmaker, raised its full-year profit forecast by 18 percent on a quicker-than-expected recovery from the March 11 earthquake. The automaker now expects to sell 3.435 million vehicles in the year ending March 2012, up from an earlier estimate of 3.3 million. “We‘ve been able to move up the recovery from the parts shortage,’’ Fumihiko Ike, Honda’s chief financial officer, said in Tokyo today. "Most of the increase in higher sales will be booked in this quarter."

Salvation at Chrysler, in the Form of Fiat

A little more than two years ago, the White House’s auto industry task force concluded flatly that Chrysler was “not viable as a stand-alone company.” David Kelleher, 44, president of David Dodge Chrysler Jeep in Glen Mills, Pa., thought Chrysler — and his dealership — were “close to death.” In what surely ranks as one of the most remarkable turnarounds in the annals of American business history, this week Chrysler reported adjusted net income of $181 million and a 30 percent rise in revenue, to $13.7 billion, even in a still-soft global car market.
