July Another Weak Month for US Auto Sales

Car shoppers worried about the U.S. economy last month and that kept sales in a funk. U.S. sales of new cars and light trucks are expected to rise only slightly in July. The weak economy and high sticker prices kept Americans from buying more. Automakers are scheduled to report last month's sales on Tuesday. Sales slowed in May and June after an earthquake in Japan cut into supplies of small cars that were in demand because of high gas prices. But even as dealers replenished their lots, buyers remained hesitant. Unemployment is high and consumers' confidence in the economy - which is crucial for car sales - remains low.

Toyota Boosts Outlook After Tough Quarter

Toyota Motor Corp. blamed the massive March 11 earthquake that ravaged Japan for its 99% plunge in fiscal first-quarter earnings, but raised its forecast for the full year. The decline stemmed from a one-third plunge in vehicle unit sales in the quarter, which began just weeks after the devastating earthquake led to production halts in Japan and North America. But Toyota issued a sunnier forecast for vehicle sales for the full fiscal year ending next March 31. The automaker expects to sell 7.6 million vehicles, an increase of 360,000 from the forecast announced in June and up from 7.31 million in the prior fiscal year.

Issa Launches Investigation Into 'Opaque' Negotiations

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee is launching an investigation into the White House's negotiations with automakers on new fuel economy standards, charging that the 54.5 mpg target was chosen without a transparent rulemaking process. "It's about the transparency," [Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.)] said yesterday. "The last thing we want is the power of the presidency being used to essentially gain something that's not supported by science and may not be supported by the American people." Issa also questioned whether the 54.5 mpg target could be supported by a technical assessment and whether the cars would be safe. He added that consumers may not back the new fleet, which will likely include more electric vehicles or hybrids.

For Car Dealers, Facebook Draws Fans, But Not Sales

Who "likes" a car dealership on Facebook? Well, 415 people do, according to Millevoi Bros. Auto Sales & Service's fan page. Mark Millevoi, the owner of the dealership in Northeast Philadelphia, joined the 750-million-member social media site in hopes that it would help sales. So far, Millevoi is disappointed. Stephen Wade Nissan, one of nine Utah car dealerships owned by Stephen Wade, chairman of the National Automobile Dealers Association, tells a different Facebook story. Two-and-a-half years ago, the Nissan dealership started a Facebook page that yielded no results. But two months ago, the Nissan outlet began an aggressive Facebook campaign. Since then, fans grew from 170 to 579 as of late last month.
