Toyota's North American Production Back at 100%

Toyota's North American production is back at 100%, ahead of expectations. The return to normal levels was confirmed at a press event by Steve St. Angelo, motor engineering and manufacturing executive VP. The recovery is ahead of initial expectations. Shortly after the March 11 disaster in Japan, Toyota had forecast a return to normal production by November or December. Toyota said in June that eight of its 12 North American-built models were back at 100% output -- Avalon, Camry, Corolla, Matrix, Highlander, Sienna, Sequoia and Venza. The latest announcement confirms 100% production of Tacoma, Tundra, RAV 4 and Lexus RX 350. Together, the 12 models account for nearly 70% of the company's U.S. sales, Toyota said.

Retail Sales Flat in August, Auto Demand Declined

Consumers spent less on autos, clothing and furniture to leave retail sales unchanged in August. The lack of growth suggests households became more cautious during wild stock market fluctuations and increased fears about the economy. Auto sales fell 0.3 percent in August. The flat reading for retail sales was a surprise given private reports from retailers and auto dealers that suggested a brighter picture in August. Major automakers reported healthy sales increases in August, largely because dealers introduced new models and offered cheaper financing.

Americans Driving Less, Filling Up Gas Tanks Less

Americans continue to drive less in the face of high gas prices and a weak economy, as gasoline purchases fell 3.4 percent last week. MasterCard SpendingPulse reported that Americans purchased 62.3 million barrels of gasoline in the week ending Sept. 9. Over the last month, the amount of gasoline purchased fell 2.7 percent. Last month, the U.S. Transportation Department said Americans drove 15.5 billion fewer miles in the first half of the year — as roadway use fell to its lowest level since 2004. As Americans drive less, they may be more likely to hold onto older vehicles.

Auto Makers Focus on Bright Side in Frankfurt

Car makers at Europe's largest automotive fair largely shrugged off concerns over the industry's growth prospects in the face of market volatility and high sovereign debt in Europe and the U.S., with most manufacturers stressing their finances are stronger than in the run-up to the last financial slump and that a repeat of the 2008-2009 financial crisis isn't likely. "We expect the global car market to grow further next year ... even though the risks have increased slightly," Christian Klingler, the sales chief of Volkswagen AG , Europe's largest car maker by sales, told reporters on the sidelines of the Frankfurt motor show.

Families of 9/11 Thank NADA Foundation for Scholarships

Scholarship America recently held an emotional “Evening of Remembrance” in New York to thank donors -- including Bob Mallon of the National Automobile Dealers Charitable Foundation -- that contributed $1 million or more to support the educational needs of the September 11th families. Lauren Segel, the president of Scholarship America, said the event was organized at the request of the families who wanted to publicly thank “those who contributed so much and so meaningfully in the dark days following the September 11th tragedy.” NADA Foundation Chairman Mallon spearheaded the effort to donate funds to help educate the children of 9/11 victims. “I was watching television news coverage after the attacks and I saw some of the grieving wives of the missing firefighters,” Mallon said. “And I thought then that we should do something to help their children. I have a passion for education. So this was a natural. Scholarships restore hope in the future,” he added.
