Volkswagen to Invest Record $86.1 Billion through 2016

Volkswagen AG will invest a record 62.4 billion euros ($86.1 billion) over the next five years to underpin its goal of becoming the world’s largest carmaker. The supervisory board voted today to approve the spending on plants, vehicles and research and development for the carmaker’s nine brands, the Wolfsburg, Germany-based company said in a statement. VW is expanding in China, its largest market, as part of a broader plan to leapfrog Toyota Motor Corp. and General Motors Co. and become the world’s biggest carmaker by 2018.

Automakers Resolve to Drop a Few Pounds

The 64th Frankfurt Motor Show offers ample evidence that automakers still cannot agree on what energy source will power the cars of the future — petroleum, hydrogen, electricity or some fuel yet undiscovered. But they all agree on one point: cars are going to have to become lighter. A lot lighter. “When weight is reduced and packaging size is made more compact, efficiency gains in fuel economy, range and reliability all multiply,” said Bob Carter, a Toyota group vice president and general manager.

End of Era: Last Ford Crown Victoria Rolls Down Line

The last Ford Crown Victoria rolled off the assembly line at the automaker's St. Thomas plant in Canada [Thursday], marking the end of the huge, body-on-frame, rear-wheel-drive car as the reigning king of the American road. While the rest of us lament the passing of an era, Ford is going to miss the healthy profits that the Crown Vic brought in. It sold 1.8 million of them since the latest version was introduced in 1992.

Chevy Sonic Subcompact Gets Up to 40 mpg, GM Says

General Motors Co.'s newest subcompact, the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic, will get an estimated 40 miles per gallon highway with a 1.4-liter engine and manual transmission, the company said Thursday. The Sonic is an important launch for GM and replaces the lackluster Aveo, which was roundly criticized for its poor quality and cheap materials. "Sonic changes the subcompact stereotype and puts an end to the term 'econobox,'" said Joaquin Nuno-Whelan, the car's vehicle line director and chief engineer.

Chevy Volt vs. Nissan Leaf: Who's Winning?

Americans love a rivalry, whether it is Dunkin' Donuts vs. Starbucks, or the Yankees vs. the Red Sox. So it is not surprising that the simultaneous launch of the Chevy Volt and the Nissan Leaf late last year built anticipation for a grand face-off. Who's ahead today? It's Volt, because the gas engine means it never leaves drivers stranded. But Volt's technology is expensive, and more efficient batteries eventually will make it obsolete. In the long run the Leaf gets the checkered flag.

Study: Most Parents Fail Child Car Safety Seat Test

Most parents aren't using child seats correctly, research released Thursday from the non-profit group Safe Kids USA shows. Only 30% are using the tether straps that keep the tops of child seats — and children's heads — secured in crashes, and many are not using the safest seats for their children's ages. Child safety advocates say several factors are contributing to the disappointing showing. One is a lack of public awareness.

Editor's note: NADA has been a leader in promoting child passenger safety. Each year, new-car dealers across the country host free child safety seat inspections at their dealerships. Dealers have inspected more than 1 million safety seats over the past six years. For more information on child passenger safety for dealers and parents, click here.

2012 Volkswagen Beetle Gets 'Manly' Redo

Man up, Volkswagen is saying to its iconic Beetle. We love all those female buyers, but the cute look is leaving too much male money on the table. VW U.S. chief Jonathan Browning says the New Beetle, discontinued in August 2010, had "a very large contingent of female buyers. We want to keep those buyers and expand to male buyers." The 2012 Beetle hit showrooms Thursday, starting at the same $18,995 (before $770 shipping) as the model it replaces. It has a meaner look outside, more like the TT from VW's corporate relative Audi.

NADA Foundation Ambassador Supports Reading Program in Michigan

Richard Genthe knows all too well what it’s like to see a child struggle with reading. Two of his children, diagnosed with dyslexia at an early age, had difficulty reading until they completed a groundbreaking literacy program in Denver, Colo. One of Genthe’s children advanced five grade levels after the first 20 hours of tutoring. Now, as an Ambassador of the National Automobile Dealers Charitable Foundation, Genthe is making sure children in his home state have the same opportunities to improve their reading and learning skills as his children had.
