Enviro Who Named Himself After Earth to Blast Obama's CAFE Standards

Along with the usual cast of characters from federal agencies and D.C.-based environmental and industry groups, today's House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing on the Obama administration's new corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards will feature one particularly intriguing witness. Scott Grenerth has been a professional truck driver for 10 years and before that studied and taught environmental education. In fact, Grenerth is the name he and his wife took on their wedding day. It's pronounced "green earth." Given all that, you might think that Grenerth would be testifying in favor of the new heavy-duty truck rule that the Obama administration rolled out as part of their effort to raise fuel economy standards. You'd be wrong.

United Auto Workers, Chrysler Reach Tentative Labor Deal

Chrysler Group LLC, which hasn’t turned an annual profit since its 2009 bankruptcy, reached a tentative agreement for a new labor contract with the United Auto Workers. The accord adds 2,100 jobs and includes $4.5 billion of investments, “to produce new models and upgraded vehicles and components by 2015,” the union said in an e-mailed statement. The union reached new four-year labor agreements with GM on Sept. 16 and Ford on Oct. 4. UAW members at GM approved their contract last month. Union members are still voting at Ford.

GM Expected to Reveal All-Electric Car

Battery-powered offering likely to target city drivers

General Motors Co. is expected to announce today it will sell an all-electric car in the United States. The car will be a small, battery-powered vehicle designed for urban markets, sources familiar with the plans said. The vehicle is expected to be an electric Spark, which is sold in Europe as a four-cylinder, and it will come to the U.S. in 2013. The company is holding a media briefing for journalists today at its headquarters in Detroit in honor of Chevrolet's centennial anniversary Nov. 3. At the Detroit auto show in January, General Motors CEO Dan Akerson said the company was developing an all-electric vehicle for the U.S. market to complement the extended-range Chevrolet Volt that went on sale in December.

Car Dealers Reach Out to Smartphone Crowd

The Asbury Automotive Group dealership chain recently set up a system that allows people to use their mobile phones and other computer devices to schedule online service-department appointments. But fewer than 10% of customers are doing so. “Most still are likely to pick up the phone,” says Bob Murray, Asbury’s director of operational marketing. “I don’t understand that, because we have all these technology tools. But we are moving in the direction of online appointments.” It’s sometimes hard to estimate the speed at which customers adapt to dealership’s new communication-technology offerings. But in the case of online service appointments, eventually they will get there, Jack Simmons, Internet trainer for, tells WardsAuto.

Cadillac Bringing 'Gesture Recognition' to Touch Screens

Now, activating the touch screen in a Cadillac won't even require a touch. Just putting your hand near it will cause it to activate. Just as most people have mastered the art of operating their smartphones and tablet computers, Cadillac is going to bring similar movements to the car. It's called CUE, for Cadillac User Experience. Executives view it as the next great leap in simplicity and convenience. CUE comes first to the new Cadillac XTS, the luxury brand's new large car, in April. Next, it will show up on the new ATS small car next summer.
