NADA Chairman Outlines New Study of Factory Image Programs

Objective, fact-based study looks at factors that drive return-on-investment of factory-mandated dealership remodeling programs

New-car dealers who have been hit hard by the economic recession need less financial pressure—not more—especially when faced with tough decisions to remodel their dealerships, said Stephen W. Wade, chairman of the National Automobile Dealers Association. “Each year dealers collectively invest billions of dollars in facility upgrades, much of it mandated by the auto manufacturers,” Wade said in remarks today to the Automotive Press Association in Detroit. “These costs have a significant impact on dealer balance sheets, in many cases severely straining them and in some cases even persuading a dealer to leave the business rather than commit such large sums.” Seeking an objective analysis, NADA has commissioned a fact-based study to determine both the positive and negative factors that drive the return-on-investment of facility image programs. Fed Survey Finds Economy Expanding Modestly

The Federal Reserve says its 12 bank regions expanded at a modest pace in September and early October, a slight improvement from the previous period. The Fed said Wednesday that consumer spending rose slightly in most districts. A key reason was more people purchased new cars, in part because dealers had a greater selection of models. Stronger consumer spending could help tamp down concerns that the economy is at risk of a recession. The economy grew at an annual pace of just 0.9 percent in the first six month of the year, the slowest growth since the recession ended two years ago.

Ford, GM Economists Foresee Better 2012 for Auto Sales

Economists for General Motors Co. and Ford Motor Co. expect U.S. auto sales to increase in 2012 above the 12.5 million to 13.5 million forecast for this year. "We see growth in 2012 for one reason ... vehicles are getting very, very old," Ford senior economist C. Jenny Lin said Wednesday at a gathering hosted by the National Association of Manufacturers. GM Chief Economist G. Mustafa Mohatarem also is forecasting a better 2012. But Mohatarem noted his boss, GM Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson, told Automotive News last week he expects "flattish" U.S. industry sales next year. "Dan's view is that we should be planning very conservatively — that so many things can and have gone wrong this year," Mohatarem said. "So many things can go wrong around the world that you can't plan on fundamentals driving this thing."

BMW Expects to Keep U.S. Luxury Sales Lead Going Into 2012

[BMW], poised to become the best-selling luxury brand in the U.S. this year, can keep the spot in 2012’s first quarter as it introduces its redesigned 3-Series sedan. “We have a window to stay No. 1 in the first quarter,” Ludwig Willisch, who took over BMW’s North American operations Oct. 1, said in an interview yesterday in New York. “Our model lineup is broad. We have a lot of opportunities to get there.” Willisch’s remarks run counter to those of his predecessor, Jim O’Donnell, who said in an August interview that BMW will probably be outsold by Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz early next year before the redesigned 3-Series hits U.S. dealerships.

Chevy Turns to Pictures to Celebrate a Centennial

The Chevrolet division of General Motors is turning to television to mark its 100th anniversary with a commercial that [was] introduced on Wednesday night during the first game of the 2011 World Series on Fox Broadcasting. The commercial, titled “Then and Now,” is the most recent element in a multimedia commemoration of the centennial of Chevrolet. The commercial reflects how when “it’s your birthday, you have a tendency to look back at what you’ve accomplished and look forward at what lies ahead,” said Chris Perry, vice president for Chevrolet marketing and global strategy at G.M.

Mechanic Rescues Hawk Jammed in Grille of Car

Matt Whitehead, a mechanic at Park Place Lexus in Grapevine, [Texas] has seen just about every critter that could get stuck in or struck by a car. "[I've seen] small birds, rodents, squirrels, reptiles. Anything but fish," Whitehead said. But there is one thing Matt Whitehead hadn't seen before — until Saturday. That’s when a customer appeared in the service bay who’d been driving at more than 60 miles an hour when a red-tailed hawk jammed into the radiator grille of his car.
