GM to Block Sale of Saab to Chinese Automakers

General Motors Co. said Monday it will not support the sale of its former Swedish car unit Saab Automobile AB to two Chinese automakers. The move may mean the end of the struggling Swedish luxury automaker. "Although General Motors is open to the continued supply of powertrains and other components to Saab under appropriate terms and conditions, GM will not agree to the continuation of the existing technology licenses or the continued supply of 9-4X vehicles to Saab following the proposed change in ownership as it would not be in the best interests of GM shareholders," GM spokesman Jim Cain said.

Video: Ford's Czubay: 'We Want Consumers to Have a Choice in Powertrains'

Ford Motor Company's U.S. Sales Chief, Ken Czubay, says the automaker expects to meet the challenges of energy independence and environmental sustainability by collaborating with its key stakeholders and providing car shoppers with choices of new, fuel-efficient cars and trucks. Czubay said "responsible trade-offs need to be made" on the fuel economy issue because ultimately the buying public will determine the kind of vehicles they want from the size to choosing the energy sources from the traditional internal combustion engine to electric. "We don't know how it's going to end up relative to the powertrains, but we want the consumers to have a choice in powertrains," Czubay said in Part Two of an interview on "AutoFocus with David Hyatt," a public affairs television program recorded in Studio One at the headquarters of the National Automobile Dealers Association in McLean, Va. Click here to view Part Two of the Czubay interview on "AutoFocus."

Toyota Withdraws Outlook on Thai Floods, Quake, Yen

Toyota Motor Corp withdrew its annual profit guidance on Tuesday as Thai floods threaten output just as it had recovered from supply shortages that battered production after the March earthquake in Japan. Like Toyota, Honda Motor Co also dropped its earnings forecasts after being hard hit by Thailand's worst floods in at least 50 years, although Nissan Motor Co raised its outlook as it adapts more quickly to the disaster. Toyota's three vehicle plants in Thailand, its Southeast Asian export hub, halted work on October 10 because of the floods, and a shortage of parts forced it to cut output in nine other countries including Japan. The three plants will be down at least until November 12, the company has said.

Former Bush Transportation Secretary Pushes Obama Administration on Clean Cars

The Obama administration's call for cars getting 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025 should be met without favoring any particular clean-energy technology, former President George W. Bush's Transportation secretary Norman Mineta said Monday. "Trying to get to 54 miles per gallon is not going to [just] be answered by either hybrid or electric," he said in an interview with The Hill. "There's room for clean gas and turbo-charged engines. You can have a smaller engine, a lighter engine and still end up having horsepower and less emissions." Republicans in Congress have targeted the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Transportation for the fuel economy standards, arguing that there was a lack of transparency because they were implemented through executive action.

Chevy Dealers to Start Selling Volt Demos

Chevrolet dealers can start selling their Volt demo units, General Motors said Monday, more than doubling the number of the extended-range electric cars available for immediate purchase. Chevrolet has almost 2,600 dealers who are authorized to sell the Volt, but about 700 of them have yet to receive a model they can sell. About 2,300 Volt demos were unable to be sold. Dealerships had been required to keep the cars on their lots for six months before selling them as used vehicles, a policy GM hoped would bring in new customers who wanted to experience the car's battery- and gas-powered ride. "I don't want anybody to suffer," GM North American President Mark Reuss said. "I want everybody to be able to sell the cars, now that everybody has been trained on it."

The NADA Story

The NADA story began in 1917 when 30 auto dealers traveled to the nation’s capital to convince Congress not to impose a luxury tax on the automobile. They successfully argued that the automobile is a necessity of American life, not a luxury. From that experience was born the National Automobile Dealers Association. Today, NADA represents nearly 16,000 new-car and -truck dealerships with 32,500 franchises, both domestic and international.
