GM's Global Resurgence to No. 1 Symbolizes New World for Automakers

It’s not just Toyota Motor Corp.’s recalls last year or Japan’s earthquake driving General Motors Co. back to being the world’s largest carmaker. Nor is it completely to GM’s credit. What’s really happening is a historic shift in the car business. This year, GM is poised to retake leadership as the No. 1 automaker that it fumbled away to Toyota in 2008 as the Detroit giant careened toward bankruptcy. The industry has shifted as GM rebounds and Toyota reflects on whether its race to be No. 1 was wise, said Harvard Business School professor Willy Shih. “It’s a rather remarkable recovery given the shape GM was in two years ago,” Shih, who has written on restoring American competitiveness, said in a phone interview. “GM lost a generation of customers. To win some back is an achievement.”

How Chrysler Keeps Killing It

How does an auto company, saddled with discount brands, outdated technology and hand-me-down products, grow sales in a becalmed economy? That's Chrysler's secret sauce and it has been producing spectacular results. Left for dead by the side of the road two years ago, it has quietly rehabilitated itself and now stands as 2011's most accomplished full-line manufacturer.

Toyota to Resume Thai Auto Production Nov. 21

Toyota says it is resuming production at its Thai plant Nov. 21, where output had been disrupted by a supply shortage caused by flooding. Issa Turns Sights to Calif. Air Agency in CAFE Investigation

House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Darrell Issa is roping in a new player to his investigation of the Obama administration's fuel economy standards negotiations, targeting the state of California. In a letter to California Air Resources Board (CARB) Chairwoman Mary Nichols, the California Republican says he is expanding his investigation to explore the role CARB played in setting the national standards. In his letter, Issa says CARB's waiver has the potential to "create an unworkable 'patchwork' of regulations that would wreak havoc on the industry." Issa also accuses the state of regulating fuel economy standards, which he says is "in direct contravention of the law."

Saab Discusses New Ownership Structure

Saab Automobile AB said Wednesday that it is discussing a new ownership structure with its Chinese investors, trying to save plans of selling the cash-starved company after former owner General Motors Co. objected to the deal. General Motors, which owns the technology that several Saab models are based on, said Monday it won't continue to license its technology to Saab Automobile following the proposed change of ownership. GM's move threatens to put an end to the plans of selling the cash- strapped car maker, which liquidity dried up earlier this year after the company missed its sales targets ...

Sixth Generation Dealer Sisters Share Their Passion for Running America's Oldest Transportation Company

For the two sisters that own Hare Chevrolet, the passion for their family’s business came later in life. As youths, the women just wanted to escape their hometown. “At first, after graduating college, I just thought about how I didn’t want to live in ‘our town’ (Noblesville). Boy, how that has changed,” [Monica] Peck told Auto Remarketing laughingly. Now, as they carry on the family business, the two sisters say they desire to be as “big a part of the Noblesville community as possible.”

The NADA Story

The NADA story began in 1917 when 30 auto dealers traveled to the nation’s capital to convince Congress not to impose a luxury tax on the automobile. They successfully argued that the automobile is a necessity of American life, not a luxury. From that experience was born the National Automobile Dealers Association. Today, NADA represents nearly 16,000 new-car and -truck dealerships with 32,500 franchises, both domestic and international.
