U.S. Retail Sales Rise, Beat Forecast on Electronics Gains

Retail sales rose more than projected in October as Americans snapped up Apple Inc. iPhones and demand for automobiles improved, giving the world’s largest economy a boost entering the final quarter of 2011. Consumer spending, the biggest part of the economy, needs to keep growing to bolster the expansion as the European credit crisis threatens to slow sales overseas. “Households continue to spend at a pace that can keep the U.S. economy comfortably out of recession,” said Eric Green, chief market economist at TD Securities in New York. “These numbers give me more confidence that retailers’ expectations of stronger sales growth this holiday season will come true.”

Dealers: Chevy Volt Fire Investigation Doesn't Faze Customers

News of a federal investigation into a Chevrolet Volt that caught fire hasn’t spooked shoppers of the plug-in hybrid, several Chevy dealers say. “No one has asked about it,” says Ronald DeTommaso, general manager at Atlantic Chevrolet-Cadillac in Bay Shore, N.Y., on Long Island. On Friday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that a Volt at one of its test facilities caught fire about three weeks after the agency had conducted a test crash on the car. Jim Purves, a sales manager at Al Serra Chevrolet in Grand Blanc, Mich., said customers haven’t asked about the media reports of the Volt fire. “I think GM did a great job by getting out there and quickly clarifying the situation,” he said.

Honda to Restore Some Output in U.S., Canada

Honda Motor Co. will lift some production cutbacks during the next two weeks at its six auto plants in Canada and the U.S. now limited due to continued flooding in Thailand. Honda Canada said it is working closely with its suppliers in Thailand and throughout its global network to reestablish the flow of parts for the products made in North America. Auto production rates will vary from plant to plant, but some plants will produce at rates above the previously announced 50% of the original plan through Nov. 30. All plants in Canada and the U.S. are expected to produce at normal levels on Dec. 1 and Dec. 2. Production plans after Dec. 2 will be announced in the future, the company said.

Big 3 Make an Impression in LA

The 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show will mirror the taste of the crucial California market, where Detroit automakers are making inroads. Luxury, performance and green vehicles will take center stage at the show, which opens to the media Wednesday. The show typically has been a bigger story for the Japanese and other foreign automakers. But shows don't follow themes the way they once did, said Aaron Bragman, analyst with IHS Automotive in Northville. Case in point: Ford and Lincoln are planning seven vehicle debuts, ranging from Mustangs and ST versions of the Focus and Fiesta, to the freshened Ford Flex family vehicle. Toyota Motor Corp. plans no debuts.

Volkswagen May Buy Porsche's Carmaking to Salvage Busted Merger

Volkswagen AG's two-year effort to merge with Porsche SE is on the brink of being scrapped as legal tangles and taxes confound ambitions to unite Ferdinand Porsche’s legacy. The supervisory board of Europe’s largest carmaker will consider alternatives to the 2009 merger agreement at a meeting on Nov. 18, the final scheduled gathering this year, two people with direct knowledge of the situation said. To avoid further delays in cooperation, VW may drop a merger and instead buy Porsche’s carmaking business, the people said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the deliberations are private.

The NADA Story

The NADA story began in 1917 when 30 auto dealers traveled to the nation’s capital to convince Congress not to impose a luxury tax on the automobile. They successfully argued that the automobile is a necessity of American life, not a luxury. From that experience was born the National Automobile Dealers Association. Today, NADA represents nearly 16,000 new-car and -truck dealerships with 32,500 franchises, both domestic and international.
