For Obama's Green-Car Revolution, Fits and Starts

The Obama administration has poured roughly $5 billion in taxpayer funds into the electric-car industry, offering incentives to manufacturers, their suppliers and even car buyers who might want to go green. But analysts say the risk is rising that taxpayers in many cases will not see a return on their money soon, if ever. Instead, they warn that some federally subsidized companies could be forced to shut down in coming months. Supporters of Obama’s green-car initiatives say that there are still industry bright spots and that this start-up sector will simply take longer to deliver results. A key industry problem is that electric cars are generally far more expensive than gas guzzlers. That’s true even with up to $7,500 in stimulus tax credits offered for each vehicle.

UAW Chief Says No Target Picked for Organizing

Top officials of the United Auto Workers have decided for now against targeting a single company in its effort to sign up workers at U.S. factories owned by foreign automakers. UAW President Bob King told The Associated Press in an interview on Wednesday that the union's executive board won't make any decision until it sees how the automakers react to UAW demands to be allowed to pitch workers and let them vote on joining the union. There's no deadline for a decision, but the union already is starting to train workers to demonstrate at dealerships and to recruit workers at foreign-owned plants.

BBB Scam Alert: Email Contains Malicious Link

An email with the subject line "Complaint from your customers" may be a scam, according to an urgent scam alert issued today by the Council of Better Business Bureaus. The Council warned businesses and consumers that the return email address, riskmanager@bbb.org, is not an address the BBB uses, according to an email from BBB spokesperson Kelsey Owen. The fake scam email is signed with the address of the Council of Better Business Bureaus, which is the national office of the BBB system, but links to a non-BBB website. Owen, in her email alert, warns, "Do NOT click on the link."

Big 3 Confident Going Into Auto Show

'They're back,' says NAIAS organizer

Organizers of the upcoming 2012 North American International Auto Show promise the event will be bigger, better and bolder as America's automakers find their footing on the other side of the Great Recession. "You will see a different attitude. You will see it in the displays, in the intros and in the atmosphere," said 2012 show chairman Bill Perkins. "The other thing you will see at the show is the strength of the domestic manufacturers. They are gaining confidence. They're back." More than 730,000 people attended the show this year, and organizers expect next year's tally to exceed that by as much as 15 percent.

The NADA Story

The NADA story began in 1917 when 30 auto dealers traveled to the nation’s capital to convince Congress not to impose a luxury tax on the automobile. They successfully argued that the automobile is a necessity of American life, not a luxury. From that experience was born the National Automobile Dealers Association. Today, NADA represents nearly 16,000 new-car and -truck dealerships with 32,500 franchises, both domestic and international.
