Insurance Institute Gives 115 Vehicles Top Safety Rating

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety today releases its list of Top Safety Picks – the 2012 model-year vehicles with the best crash-test ratings. There are 18 new award winners on the list, and 97 vehicles that were winners in 2011 carry over for 2012. The top picks include 15 vehicles that are available as hybrids, and both the Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt remain on the list from 2011. Fifteen of the winners are available as hybrids and the Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf electrics carry over their awards from 2011.

U.S.-China Trade Spat Escalates to Autos

China said on Wednesday that it will levy duties on imports of some U.S.-made cars in retaliation for U.S. trade policies, the latest volley in an escalating trade spat between the world's two largest economies. The move is likely to make U.S.-made cars even more expensive in China, the world's largest auto market, where existing taxes and duties can add 25% or more to an imported vehicle's cost, depending on the model. Still, many auto makers won't be affected because they make much of what they sell in China domestically through joint ventures, according to analysts and the companies.

3 Tips to Aggravation-Free F&I

Want happier customers? Chris Sutton can help. As director of automotive retail service at J.D. Power and Associates, Sutton has helped survey thousands of consumers on their car-buying experiences for Power's annual Sales Satisfaction Index. Customer responses to the survey category "Working out the Deal," are linked to the F&I department. Scores improved in this year's SSI for "Clarity of document review." ... Sutton says that most people give dealerships good marks for explaining the necessary documents. Buyers in the 2011 study, published this month, gave dealerships a higher grade for "Timeliness of paperwork process," an area that traditionally drags down the average. "Customers definitely want that F&I process to go quickly," Sutton says. "Satisfaction is best when F&I review takes 15 minutes or less, which may not always be realistic, and it really drops off after 30 minutes."

Ford: 5-Passenger Focus Electric to Get 100 MPG

Ford Motor Co. said Wednesday that the 2012 Ford Focus Electric will be the first five-passenger electric vehicle to get the equivalent of 100 miles per gallon. The figures were released prior to an event at the Michigan Assembly Plant to mark the start of production of the electric compact car that will lead the field of electric vehicles, including the Chevrolet Volt extended-range hybrid. Ford also developed a car that will charge in half the time of the Nissan Leaf, the only other real competitor on the market to date. The charge time is about three hours with 240-volt outlets.

Automakers Put Heads Into 'Cloud' for Infotainment

When it comes to the next generation of in-car infotainment, automakers have their heads in the cloud. Their goal is make it easy for drivers to seamlessly access movies, music, electronic books, road directions and other content always available via the Internet from central storage servers — the so-called digital cloud — instead of storing it on board or having to bring it with them in some personal device, such as an MP3 player, smartphone, tablet, etc. "The evolution of how you access ... the cloud is the next wave," says James Robbins, managing director of consultancy Accenture's North American auto practice. "All the content and data that you have will be all there at your fingertips."
