Chrysler, Up 37%, Leads Detroit Sales Gains in December

Chrysler Group posted a 37 percent jump in December U.S. sales today and joined General Motors in predicting that the industry will finish the year stronger than analysts had predicted. Chrysler's December jump capped a year that saw the automaker's U.S. volume jump 26 percent. GM said its December sales climbed 5 percent to finish the year up 13 percent; while Ford Motor Co. reported a 10 percent increase for the month and a 9 percent gain for the year.

NADA Economist: Solid December Auto Sales Cap Off 2011 with 10% Increase

The Detroit 3 auto manufacturers – General Motors Co., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Group LLC – held a key inventory advantage over their competitors, which led to higher U.S. new car and light truck sales in December, says Paul Taylor, chief economist of the National Automobile Dealers Association. “The Detroit 3 dealers had nearly 50 percent of the inventory available for sale during December, and collectively enjoyed sales increases of more than 12 percent for the month,” Taylor said. “The inventory advantage for manufacturers based in North America will provide sales momentum during the first quarter of 2012.”

Using Recess Power, Obama Putting Cordray in Job

In a defiant display of executive power, President Barack Obama on Wednesday will buck GOP opposition and name Richard Cordray as the nation's chief consumer watchdog. Outraged Republican leaders in Congress suggested that courts would determine the appointment was illegal. With a director in place, the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau can start overseeing the mortgage companies, payday lenders, debt collectors and other financial operations often blamed for practices that helped tank the economy. Even before Obama announced the move in an appearance in Ohio, Cordray said he would begin work right away.

Global Auto Sales to Grow 6.7% This Year, Polk Says

Worldwide new vehicle sales are forecast to reach 77.7 million this year, with China accounting for the largest portion of the increase. New vehicle sales are expected to reach 17.9 million this year in the world's largest auto market, up 16% from 2011, according to Polk. The U.S. market is poised to expand to 13.7 million this year, up from about 12.8 million in 2011, with the luxury market as the fastest-growing segment, increasing by more than 14%. "More affluent buyers are returning to the market for new vehicles, after three years of spending reductions," Anthony Pratt, Polk director of forecasting for the Americas, said in a report released Tuesday.

For VW, the Eco-Friendly Hue is Blue

While other automakers are thinking green, Volkswagen is going blue. "Think Blue" is VW's latest eco-friendly catchphrase, or "philosophy" as VW calls it, encompassing efforts such as the company's attempts to green-up its factories worldwide and VW's push for more diesel-fueled cars. VW has set a new target in this ongoing campaign: It hopes to make building cars 25 percent more "environmentally compatible" at its factories by 2018. The effort also has a name: "Think Blue. Factory."
