Audi of America Partners with NADA University to Train Dealership and Company Staff

Johan De Nysschen (left), president of Audi of America, and NADA President Phil Brady, announce a new partnership between Audi and NADA University.

Audi is the first automaker to utilize NADA University's virtual classroom for its U.S. dealers.
Audi of America and its U.S. network of 278 dealers will be working together to improve dealership operations and, ultimately, customer service through a new educational partnership with the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA). Audi is the first automaker to subscribe to NADA University’s premium online training package (NADAvt) on behalf of its entire dealer body. Dealership employees can also receive certification from Audi and in some cases are eligible to receive financial benefits to take the training. “This is a big win for Audi of America,” said Ed Tonkin, an Audi dealer in Portland, Ore., and a past NADA chairman. “Audi, as a major manufacturer, will benefit greatly because their personnel, whether it be in sales or service, will have a far better understanding of the retail business from the dealer’s perspective as a result of their NADA University training. In turn, all interactions between dealership and Audi employees will be far more productive, beneficial and meaningful. I applaud Audi for taking this visionary step.”

Rental Firms Urged to Heed Recalls

Study: 2.7M used cars for sale on Web in '11 weren't repaired
Pressure is mounting on rental car companies to repair recalled vehicles before they are rented, while a new study shows that millions of used cars aren't repaired before being sold. A study released this week by Carfax says that last year more than 2.7 million used cars were offered for sale online with safety recalls that weren't repaired. Under federal law, only new-car dealers are required to complete recall repairs before [new] vehicles are sold. In July, Boxer and Sens. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., and Charles Schumer, D-N.Y, introduced legislation to prohibit car rental companies from renting or selling vehicles to consumers that are under recall.

Editor's note: The Schumer-Boxer legislation, while focused on large car rental companies, would also impose new requirements on dealerships that rent five or more vehicles. The legislation could also impose new mandates on dealerships that provide loaner vehicles to their customers. NADA will continue to inform Senators on the unintended consequences of this legislation.

Dealership Service Departments Get Creative

Dealers are using creative ways to mine for more service business from today’s aging vehicle fleet. The market for older, higher-mileage vehicles will grow and remain strong until at least 2015, says data-cruncher R.L. Polk. The longer ownership periods present opportunities for dealership service departments. “The aging fleet – our average service customer has 65,000 miles on their vehicle – is a two-fold opportunity for us, both in service and sales,” says Robbie Long, fixed-operations director at Raymond Chevrolet-Kia in Antioch, Ill., and Ray Chevrolet-Suzuki in Fox Lake, Ill.

The NADA Story

The NADA story began in 1917 when 30 auto dealers traveled to the nation’s capital to convince Congress not to impose a luxury tax on the automobile. They successfully argued that the automobile is a necessity of American life, not a luxury. From that experience was born the National Automobile Dealers Association. Today, NADA represents nearly 16,000 new-car and -truck dealerships with 32,500 franchises, both domestic and international. For more information, visit www.nada.org.
