GM Recalls 475,148 Chevy Cruzes

Just days after basking in its best performance ever in a key quality study, General Motors said Friday it is recalling most every Chevrolet Cruze built and sold to prevent the risk of engine fires. The fires can break out when fluids drip onto a hot plastic shield below the engine.

GM to Add 800 Workers, Third Shift to Texas SUV Plant

General Motors Co. said Friday it will add about 800 jobs when it launches a third shift early next year at its Arlington Assembly plant in Texas. The Detroit automaker said the shift is expected to begin in first quarter 2013, and the staffing ramp up will begin in the fourth quarter this year.

Nissan Chief Denies Report That He Plans to Step Down Early

The chief executive of Nissan Motor, Carlos Ghosn, said Friday that while he was not thinking of stepping down from his post anytime soon, the Japanese automaker had succession plans in place to select the next chief from within its ranks.

NADA Rolls Out Fully Automated Online Energy Use Survey

The National Automobile Dealers Association recently introduced what it’s calling a fully automated online energy usage survey as part of a national effort to understand energy consumption trends among dealerships in the United States. NADA explained that data derived from the survey will aid in the development of a national ENERGY STAR energy performance scale for dealerships by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Porsche Wants Quick Sale of Sports-Car Unit

Porsche Automobil Holding SE Monday said it wants to complete the sale of the remaining 50.1% stake in its sports-car business to Volkswagen AG as quickly as possible, brushing aside criticism that a tax-free deal before August 2014 would be bad for German tax payers.

Champion of the Corvette, Feted in the Land He Left

For the most part, the objects in the display cases may be found in the den of any Corvette fan — models, books, vintage photos. One possible exception: on a lower shelf sits a copy of a memo, written in 1953 by a recently hired General Motors engineer. The three-page document, “Thoughts Pertaining to Youth, Hot Rodding and Chevrolet,” is considered by many to be the foundation of the brand’s longstanding pursuit of high performance.
