Toyota Takes First-Half Global Sales Lead From GM

Toyota has bounced back from safety recalls and natural disasters to retake the crown as the world's top automaker from General Motors. The Japanese automaker says it sold 4.97 million vehicles globally in the first half of the year. That's 300,000 more than GM's 4.67 million. Both companies released their numbers on Wednesday.

Daimler Second-Quarter Profit Falls on Costs to Add Compacts

Daimler reported a 13 percent decline in second-quarter profit as spending to expand the lineup of Mercedes-Benz compact cars offset higher deliveries. Earnings before interest and taxes fell to 2.24 billion euros ($2.7 billion) from 2.58 billion euros a year earlier, the company said in a statement today.

Chevy Hopes Spark Ignites Minicar Sales

GM quietly rolls out small ride geared to young, urban market

Chevrolet's 2013 Spark is quietly arriving on dealer lots in select U.S. markets, as General Motors Co. aims to win young drivers and city dwellers with the minicar's cute styling and a starting price below $13,000. The tiny hatchback — the smallest Chevy sold in the U.S. — is now rolling out in 18 markets, including Metro Detroit. Chevy Sparks in colors such as Techno Pink and Jalapeno began showing up on dealer lots locally this week. They will be available nationally by the end of the year.

BMW Financial Services to Test Short-Term Rentals at New York-Area Dealers

BMW Group Financial Services plans to offer short-term rentals at BMW dealerships under a pilot program starting next month in the New York metropolitan area. Customers will be able to make reservations online starting Aug. 13, said Ed Robinson, CEO of the captive finance company in Woodcliff Lake, N.J.

Las Vegas Car Dealer Donates to Colorado Slaying Victims

The owner of a car dealership in northwest Las Vegas is kicking in $50,000 to start a fund to help victims and responders in last week's theater massacre in Aurora, Colo. Ed Bozarth, who owns four other Chevrolet dealerships, including one in Aurora, said he and his wife decided Sunday night that they had to do something to give back to the hurting community that has given them so much.
