Customer satisfaction is left up to the dealers

Chrysler Group is killing dealer incentives for customer satisfaction and eliminating penalties for dealers who don't build stores that meet the company's requirements. In a sink-or-swim approach to customer service, the automaker is leaving buyer satisfaction up to its dealers. It's a stark break from the carrot-and-stick approach used by rival General Motors and is more akin to Toyota's relationship with its retail network.

Private Buyers Snapping Up Stores

M&A action is up, but price disputes stall many deals

Through the first half of the year, acquisitions of U.S. dealerships by the public retailers ran at less than half the pace of 2011. Private-cap buyers appear to be more active, but disagreements over pricing, particularly real estate valuations, make those deals harder to close.

N.H.T.S.A. Sets Standards for Data Collected From Black Boxes in Cars

Beginning next month, new cars equipped with so-called black boxes — instruments that record crash information — must meet certain criteria for categories of data captured, accuracy and crash survivability. But the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is still working on a rule that would require all new cars sold to contain the devices in the first place.

General Motors, Isuzu recalling 258,000 SUVs

General Motors and Isuzu are recalling more than 258,000 SUVs in the U.S. and Canada to fix short circuits in power window and door lock switches that can cause fires. The recall covers Chevrolet TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy, Buick Rainier, Isuzu Ascender and Saab 97-X SUVs from the 2006 and 2007 model years.

Akerson Seeks Culture Change

General Motors Co. chairman and CEO Dan Akerson has vowed to end company "fiefdoms" as he remakes the automaker's global structure. "We're a global company that operates as small, little fiefdoms. That's got to stop," Akerson told employees during a recent global town hall meeting.
