President works to show he's willing to make tough choices

President Barack Obama is using his decision to rescue the U.S. auto industry as the cornerstone of his re-election effort at the Democratic National Convention this week. Numerous speakers — including former President Bill Clinton, United Auto Workers president Bob King, a General Motors worker at the company's Lordstown, Ohio, assembly plant, and the founder of CarMax — drove home that fact during the convention's first two days.

GM Future Jeopardized Unless it Dumps Opel, Report Says

General Motors’ Opel subsidiary could lose at least another $16 billion by 2024 and the only way to avoid this threat to its own future is to dump the European subsidiary as soon as possible, investment bank Morgan Stanley said. Kia Plans 2013 Product Push, Further Expansion Into High-Volume Segments

Kia has been flying high since 2008, when its big push into the U.S. began with a $1.4 billion investment in an Irvine, CA, design studio and headquarters and a 360,000-unit capacity assembly plant in West Point, GA. Since then, Kia has posted 24 straight months of record monthly sales.  But Kia faces capacity constraints at the West Point plant, which sources product for 40% of its sales, as the brand stretches to compete in bread-and-butter segments.
