Toyota Learned of Window Switch Defect Four Years Before Recall

Toyota Motor Corp. first learned in 2008 about a defect in power-window switches that this week prompted it to recall 7.43 million vehicles worldwide for fire hazards, according to documents filed with U.S. regulators. Toyota, based in Toyota City, Japan, received a report in September 2008 from the U.S. about “an unusual smell” from the power-window master switch and “thermal damage” to the switch, the company said in a report posted yesterday on the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website. “There was really no trend early on and it took considerable time to diagnose what seemed to be an isolated problem and how it was occurring,” John Hanson, a U.S.-based spokesman for Toyota, said in an e-mail.

Ford will continue to pay a fourth-quarter dividend of five cents per share, the board of directors declared as it wrapped up its monthly meeting with no further news yet on a succession plan for CEO Alan Mulally. Succession is a running issue for the board and the expectation is front-runner Mark Fields, president of the Americas, will be appointed to the new position of chief operating officer as a final grooming step in the months leading up to Mulally's retirement. Mulally, 67, has not said when he will retire, but industry watchers expect the timing to be around the end of 2013.

Google's Driverless Car Draws Political Power

Internet giant hones its lobbying skills in state capitols; giving test drives to lawmakers

Marilyn Dondero Loop, a Nevada state assemblywoman, remembers being skeptical and concerned of possible dangers with self-driving cars when a Google Inc. lobbyist first approached her last year. But then Google introduced Ms. Dondero Loop, who chairs the assembly's transportation committee, to people who had ridden in its self-driving cars and showed her a video of one stopping when people crossed in front it. Google has taken the same inspirational playbook to other states, working with a network of local lobbyists and in-house policy experts to woo legislators with demonstrations and rides in its exotic cars.

NADA Chairman Bill Underriner will discuss the state of the retail-auto industry at the Automotive Press Association luncheon in Detroit on Tuesday, Oct. 23. Underriner will discuss opposition to stair-step incentive programs and the latest developments concerning factory-mandated dealership upgrade programs. A recent NADA facilities study found no evidence that facility improvements result in any sales gains, either short term or long term. It's a point of contention between some dealers and some manufacturers.
