Luxury, Small Cars Take Charge at L.A. Auto Show

GM's Spark EV, Ford '14 Fiesta among debuts

California is king when it comes to small cars, and this year's Los Angeles Auto Show will reinforce that title. Automakers — including Ford Motor Co., General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group LLC — will debut nearly 50 vehicles, including 24 world debuts, at this week's show. Most are small, fuel-sipping cars, with many hybrids and electrics. But luxury vehicles will make a strong showing, too.

Mahindra Hopes to Secure Aston Martin Deal this Week

India's Mahindra and Mahindra hopes to strike a deal to buy Aston Martin by the end of the week, a source with direct knowledge of the matter said. Mahindra is said to have topped an offer for Aston Martin from Italian private equity fund Investindustrial. Smart Touts Price as a Plus with Next-Generation EV

Car goes on sale in spring for $25,750

A new generation of electric car could give microcar brand Smart the momentum it needs until an all-new vehicle arrives in 2015, says Tracey Matura, general manger of Smart USA. The third-generation ForTwo Electric Drive car could account for about 30 percent of Smart's U.S. sales in a full year, Matura says. The car goes on sale in the spring with a base price of $25,750, including shipping -- making it the cheapest electric vehicle on the market.

General Motors Seeks Better Fuel Economy Through Tire Technology

General Motors is partnering with researchers at the new National Tire Research Center in Virginia to improve fuel economy through the development of new tire technology. GM, in a statement last week, said tire design can help increase fuel efficiency by as much as 7 percent. Variations in tread pattern, construction and material quality are just a few factors that determine the rolling resistance of a tire. Vehicles with lower rolling resistance require less fuel to move the vehicle forward. Tires with lower rolling resistance, along with more efficient conventional engines and electric powertrains, are expected help customers save money on gasoline.

Chrysler Ramps Up Special-Edition Vehicles

Chrysler Group LLC is producing more special-edition vehicles and versions of existing car and truck models that target select buyers. One of its better-known creations is the "man van"—a version of its Dodge Grand Caravan tailored for dads who prefer sports cars but have to drive minivans to haul kids and gear. Auto makers produce such special editions to generate buzz, command higher prices than basic models and hook customers ... who wouldn't normally consider buying their vehicles.
