Overall sales satisfaction among both new-vehicle buyers and rejecters in 2012 averages 664 (on a 1,000-point scale), which is an improvement of 16 points from 648 in 2011, according to J.D. What Fiscal Cliff? Luxury Car Sales Zoom

Porsche, Maserati and BMW are seeing major momentum. But better sales of high-end cars don't necessarily translate to an improved market for other luxury goods

If you're looking for a car that will send your neighbors into fits of envy, and are able to shell out the necessary cash, now might be a good time to buy. The luxury auto market is booming. German automaker Porsche, known for its costly sports cars, says it has already broken last year's record for sales. So what's going on? Despite the European crisis, growth in emerging markets such as China are helping fuel sales of both high-end and economy cars around the world.

Business Inventories Rise as Auto Dealers Restock

Business inventories rose in October as retailers restocked their shelves at the fastest pace since July, while sales declined. The Commerce Department said on Thursday inventories increased 0.4 percent to $1.619 trillion, after rising 0.7 percent in September. That was smack in line with expectations in a Reuters poll. October's inventories were lifted by a 0.9 percent rise in stocks at auto dealers. Inventories are a key driver to changes in gross domestic product changes. Retail inventories, excluding autos - which go into the calculation of gross domestic product - rose 0.4 percent in October.

GM Amps Up Competition in Pickup Market

General Motors Co. is making a big bet on a comeback for its pickup truck business. More like two bets. The Detroit auto maker on Thursday unveiled redesigned versions of its Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups, a tandem that makes up the auto maker's top-selling and most profitable model line. GM needs the coming 2014 trucks to be big sellers if it hopes to regain U.S. market share, catch Ford Motor Co. in the pickup market and boost its share price.

Full-Size Ford Transit Van to Offer 5-Cylinder Diesel

Ford will offer a 3.2-liter turbocharged, five-cylinder diesel engine in the new Transit full-size commercial van when it goes on sale in the U.S. late next year. It's aimed to meet the needs of buyers who want a work truck with the additional low-end torque for hauling that a diesel provides. The other engine offered is a version of Ford's 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 gasoline engine. Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Transit will be the first use of the new, 3.2-liter "Power Stroke" diesel in the U.S. It will be the only five-cylinder diesel in a commercial van here and will be Ford's second turbo diesel offering. It already has a 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel V-8 in its Super Duty pickups.

Rearview Camera Requirement Could Boost Vehicle Costs by $200

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said he'll meet with White House officials in an effort to finalize a regulation that could lead to rearview cameras in all vehicles. In February, LaHood delayed proposed regulations intended to help eliminate blind zones behind vehicles that make it difficult to see pedestrians. He set a new deadline of Dec. 31. In an interview Thursday, LaHood said it is his goal to finalize regulations by year's end.
