VW Gains Traction With Big U.S. Push

Volkswagen AG startled competitors in the auto industry a few years ago by outlining a seemingly far-fetched goal: It vowed to more than triple its U.S. sales to over one million vehicles by 2018. After a boom year in 2012 with a 31% increase in volumes due largely to a hot new family sedan, Volkswagen's U.S. operation is becoming the auto industry's Little Engine That Could. In addition to winning over one-time skeptics, its performance last year is helping recruit dealers who could help keep the gains on track.

Obama Signs Bill to Let Dealers Toss Out Insurance Booklets

President Obama today signed into law a bill allowing dealerships to stop stocking copies of a government booklet on insurance costs, the White House said. The measure, which dealers sought as a way to save time and money, cleared the U.S. House of Representatives in July without a dissenting vote. It quietly passed the U.S. Senate over the holidays. Dealer groups pushed for the passage of the bill as a way to eliminate red tape. They say the booklet is scarcely requested and lacks a purpose in an era when customers can get personalized car insurance quotes within minutes online. "Printing and mailing this booklet has simply been made obsolete by technology," said Bill Underriner, chairman of the National Automobile Dealers Association, in a statement [Thursday]. When NADA conducted a survey of 800 new car dealers this summer, 96 percent of respondents said that none of their customers had ever asked for the booklets.

Detroit Show Backers Roll Out Red Carpet to More Dealers Nationwide

The Detroit Auto Dealers Association's push to attract more U.S. auto dealers to the Detroit auto show is paying off, with as many as 800 expected next week for the event. It took 23 years for him to figure it out, but Rod Alberts, executive director of the DADA and the Detroit auto show, said it finally occurred to him this year that the organization needed to carve out a time when dealers from around the country could walk the show floor among their peers to see the new vehicles they'd soon be selling from their lots. The 2013 show will offer auto dealers an exclusive look at the show by opening it to them from 8 a.m. to noon on Jan. 16 when the doors open for Industry Preview Days for suppliers and others in the industry. Also coming next week even before dealer day: Peter Welch, the new president of the National Automobile Dealers Association, to shake hands with the carmakers, Alberts said.

Corvette Not Just for Successful Plumbers With New Design

The Chevrolet Corvette, once the coolest of cool rides on Route 66 and the rest of America's roads, has suffered the cruelest of fates: It's known as an old man's toy. Even the head of Chevy marketing acknowledges that too many people see it as the car of “the successful plumber.” General Motors Co. is determined to change that. In two days, Chevrolet will unveil the new Corvette, which so far GM has teased as having a sleeker exterior, a bigger engine and a dramatically improved interior.

Car Functions Now Controlled by Waving a Hand

Automakers are turning to gestures to limit driver distraction

Drivers have depended on gestures to maneuver through traffic since the dawn of the automobile age, from a friendly wave to a shaking fist -- or worse. Now, automakers are starting to use gestures to let drivers control functions of the car, whether it's an approaching hand to activate a dashboard infotainment system or the kick of a leg to open a crossover's tailgate.
