NADA Launches New Energy Ally Program to Help Dealerships Reduce Energy Use

Don Chalmers addresses the media at the Washington Auto Show.

New-car dealers move toward 'greener' dealerships

NADA and the EPA have partnered to help new-car dealers reduce their energy consumption through the Energy Star program. As part of this effort, NADA and EPA are encouraging dealerships to complete a brief survey that will give the agency a benchmark to better compare the energy usage of dealerships across the country and allow certification of those dealerships that perform well. The survey (www.nada.org/energystar) asks dealers to share their yearly utility bills, square footage—inside and out—and different types of equipment used at the dealership. To encourage participation, NADA has launched a new program called Energy Ally. Businesses, such as accounting, consulting and energy management firms, that assist at least five dealerships to complete the survey will be awarded an NADA Energy Ally designation. These contractors can use the recognition to market their services to other dealerships. (Information on how to apply to become an Energy Ally is available at www.nada.org/energystar).

World Vehicle Sales Surpass 80 Million in 2012

Double-digit growth in North America and the Asia-Pacific region more than compensated for a downturn in Europe and tepid growth in South America, pushing full-year 2012 global vehicle sales to 81.8 million units, a 5.2% gain from 2011. North America experienced the largest year-to-year change, with deliveries up 12.4%. The U.S., the world's fourth fastest-growing market last year, was the main catalyst in the region, with sales increasing 13.4% to nearly 14.8 million.

January's Autos Sales Figures Could Be Big

Automakers are expected to report higher sales Friday when they release January 2013 sales figures — numbers that could be the best since 2008. Industry observers say automakers will benefit from year-end momentum, need for replacement vehicles related to Hurricane Sandy and pent-up demand as they are expected to report higher sales figures over January 2012. Chrysler Group LLC, Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Co. are expected to report results Friday morning. Other automakers will follow throughout the day.

More Electric Car Loans 'Remains to Be Seen,' Chu Says

Energy Secretary Steven Chu said it “remains to be seen in the future” whether about $16 billion in available U.S. government loans to develop alternative- technology vehicles will be disbursed. Providing money for electric-vehicle development was a component of President Barack Obama's goal of having 1 million plug-in vehicles on U.S. roads by 2015, a number well above current forecasts.

Toyota Tops Car Brands in U.S. Consumer Perception, Survey Says

Toyota again topped an annual U.S. consumer survey on brand perception released today as all the top automakers' scores rose from last year. Ford, Honda, Chevrolet, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo rounded out the top six, which was unchanged from last year, according to Consumer Reports, the influential consumer magazine that conducted the survey last month. "The brand leaders have a really strong hold on the mind-share of the consumer," Jeff Bartlett, deputy auto editor online for Consumer Reports, said in an interview.
