Best Car Design Since 1960s Drives U.S. Market Share Gain

In the dark winter months before General Motors Co. filed for bankruptcy four years ago, its top designer, Ed Welburn, was growing increasingly frustrated with the negative news about his company. He gathered his 300-member design staff in the cavernous domed showroom at the automaker's suburban Detroit studios for a serious, stand-up meeting. There were no chairs. Welburn, 62, normally bookish and reserved, spoke with passion. “You are better than what is being written and said about GM,” he recalled telling them. “We're going to survive this, and when we come out on the other end of this very dark period, the world is going to be looking to see what General Motors is capable of doing. And they're going to be looking at design.” The result of Welburn's motivational moment: “The team really dug down deep -- they were angry,” he said in an interview in his sleek, postmodern office last week. “And they created some of their absolute best work.”

GM Doesn't Expect Price War in U.S. Autos

A top General Motors Co. executive said he doubts Japanese auto makers would use the weaker yen to launch a price war in the U.S. this summer even as they face softer revenue at home. North America President Mark Reuss said he believes the major Japanese auto makers will hold the line when it comes to pricing in the U.S., choosing to protect their brands rather than undercut rivals. "I don't think it pays to do some of those things that end up doing a lot of damage to the brands," Mr. Reuss said on the sidelines of an event at the company's headquarters in Detroit on Monday. "Everyone learned a lot of painful lessons and I don't see any breaks from that." Mr. Reuss added that last week, during a commencement speech, he spent some time with Toyota Motor Corp.'s North America Chief Jim Lentz where the two discussed the auto industry. He said he and Mr. Lentz shared the view that heavy incentives aren't a good move for anyone.

Toyota Overtakes BMW as Most Valuable Global Car Brand

Toyota has overtaken BMW as the most valuable automotive brand, an annual ranking of the world's top brands shows. The value of the Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Hyundai brands improved by double-digit percentages compared with 2012, largely because of strong demand in China and the United States, according to the BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands study released by market research company Millward Brown. Toyota's 2013 brand value rose 12 percent to $24.5 billion largely because of its significant inroads in the hybrid market, according to the study.

FTC Unable to Provide Compliance Data CFPB Wanted

As the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau prepares its annual report to Congress, the agency wanted specifics of what compliance matters other federal regulators are involved with regarding non-bank entities, which can include franchised and independent dealerships. The Federal Trade Commission, which has jurisdiction over dealers, shared what it had with the CFPB last week. But according to federal documents, the material wasn't everything the CFPB was seeking. Included in the FTC's annual letter to the CFPB, officials recapped enforcement and related activities regarding the Truth in Lending Act, Consumer Leasing Act, Electronic Fund Transfer Act, and Equal Credit Opportunity Act. The letter also addressed certain FTC initiatives regarding auto financing advertising, payday lending, mortgage lending advertising, mobile payments, and separate FTC staff comments filed with the CFPB on integrating TILA and Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act disclosures and on general purpose reloadable cards.

Automakers Back EU-US Trade Deal

Automakers support a proposed free trade deal between the United States and European Union, and want auto safety regulations harmonized on both sides of the Atlantic. Vehicle and auto parts trade between Europe and the United States was $57 billion in 2012, accounting for 9 percent of the total $646 billion in U.S.-EU trade. The Association of Global Automakers is the trade group representing major Asian automakers and luxury companies. Its president and chief executive Michael Stanton said in comments filed with the U.S. Trade Representative’s office that the proposed Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership “can promote economic growth, increase jobs and enhance the global competitiveness of U.S. and European producers — both in general and within the automotive sector in particular — through regulatory convergence, mutual recognition, the elimination of tariffs and other facilitation measures.” The group said the EU and U.S. should reach agreement on regulations on child restraint systems, fuel system integrity, vehicle emissions, occupant and side-impact crash protection, tire-pressure monitors and bumpers. The automakers want an agreement that would allow them to certify a vehicle for sale in either the EU or U.S., rather than on both continents.

Mercedes Financial's Newest Pay Window: Your Dashboard

For those who just can't wait to see how much they still owe on their Mercedes-Benz, the auto maker’s financial services arm is introducing a new in-vehicle application. The “My MBFS” app will be available on the infotainment screens of model year 2013 and newer Mercedes-Benz vehicles equipped with the auto maker's navigation system. Consumers can use the app to do everything from checking account status to making a payment. This marks a hat trick for the financial services company since it already has an app on the iPhone and iPad.
