Per-Dealership Sales Projected to Hit Another Record Before Plateau

The average number of unit sales per U.S. dealership will continue to rise this year, driving dealership profitability higher, before leveling off next year, a new report says. Throughput, which is the average number of sales per dealership, will rise 8 percent to a record 877 units in 2013 based on projected U.S. light-vehicle sales of 15.6 million, Urban Science, a global retail consulting firm in Detroit, predicted [Wednesday], based on data in its 2013 midyear Automotive Franchise Activity Report. The predicted rise would extend an unprecedented throughput increase to four straight years. In 2012, throughput rose 13 percent to 812, by Urban Science's count.

Bill Ford Jr. Hesitant to Declare Victory, Despite Company Gains

Good news keeps coming for Bill Ford Jr. and Ford Motor Co., with 16 straight quarters of profitability and recent positive momentum in global markets. But the Ford executive chairman has seen enough ups and downs in his two-and-a-half decades with the automaker, that he's unwilling to call Ford's long-term growth plans a success — yet. “We're on a growth plan that is not something you've seen from us in many years,” he told The Detroit News following an event marking the 150th anniversary of the birth of his great-grandfather and company founder, Henry Ford. “One thing I've learned through many years and many cycles is you set a plan and then you continually adjust. So for me to say, 'Oh yes, we've made it' and 'We're off and sailing', that's not my inclination. My inclination is to fight every day and then see where that takes us.” Ford Motor Co. made $1.23 billion after taxes during the second quarter this year, and nearly broke even in its three international regions — Europe, Asia and South America — for the first time in years.

Chrysler U.S. July Sales Rise 11%; Streak Now 40 Months

Chrysler Group LLC, the third-largest U.S. automaker, extended its streak of U.S. sales gains to 40 months as it began building a Jeep sport-utility vehicle crucial to maintaining its momentum. Deliveries in July for Chrysler, majority-owned by Fiat SpA, climbed 11 percent to 140,102 cars and light trucks, the Auburn Hills, Michigan-based company said today in a statement. The automaker trailed the 16 percent average of nine analysts' estimates in a survey by Bloomberg News. Chrysler's U.S. growth is helping pace an auto market on track for its best year since 2007 as Americans replace aging vehicles. Chief Executive Officer Sergio Marchionne is introducing the new Cherokee SUV in 2013's second half to continue an expansion that's been fueled this year by Ram trucks and Dodge Dart compact cars.

Fiat Expresses Confidence in U.S. Legal Challenge

Fiat SpA says a series of rulings by a judge in Delaware late Tuesday helps its case in its ongoing dispute with the United Auto Workers-run retiree health care trust that owns the rest of Chrysler Group LLC. The Italian automaker, which already owns 58.5 percent of Chrysler, wants to buy the remaining 41.5 percent held by the trust. But the two sides have been unable to agree on a price. Last year, Fiat filed a lawsuit, asking a court in the state where Chrysler is registered to set pricing for shares the trust is required to sell to Fiat under the terms of Chrysler's 2009 bailout by the Obama administration that gave ownership of bankrupt Chrysler to Fiat and the union's trust. On Tuesday, Delaware Chancery Court Judge Donald Parsons ruled in Fiat's favor on several claims affecting the value of those shares, but said “it would be premature for me to enter an order requiring” the trust to hand them over to Fiat. The judge's ruling clears the way for the case to go to trial, but Fiat said it still hopes to avoid that. “Fiat looks forward to resolving the few remaining issues in the litigation through the discovery requested by the court,” the company said in a statement Wednesday, adding that it “remains confident that those residual issues will also be resolved in its favor.”
