Fordís Mulally Says He'll Stay CEO At Least Through 2014

Ford Motor Co. Chief Executive Officer Alan Mulally said he intends to stay as head of the second-biggest U.S. carmaker through next year, following reports that Microsoft Corp. may seek to recruit him. “I plan to continue to serve as Ford's president and CEO until at least the end of 2014,” to remain “absolutely laser focused” on earnings growth, Mulally wrote in an e-mail to Bloomberg News today. “I love serving Ford and will continue serving Ford,” Mulally said in an interview from Berlin with Anna Edwards on Bloomberg Television's “Countdown.” Mulally, 68, has been talked about as a possible interim CEO at Microsoft, technology-news website AllThingsD reported Sept. 2. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, 57, said on Aug. 23 that he plans to step down in the next 12 months, kicking off a debate about his possible successor at the U.S. software maker.

Deals Juice U.S. Sales of Plug-In Vehicles

General Motors and Nissan Motor Co., the biggest sellers of rechargeable cars, posted record U.S. plug-in sales in August as their low-cost leases pushed battery-vehicle deliveries this year past 2012's tally. GM delivered 3,351 Chevrolet Volt plug-in sedans last month, up 18 percent from a year earlier, and Nissan's all-electric Leaf hatchback sales more than tripled to 2,420. U.S. plug-in hybrid and battery car sales totaled 57,976 in 2013's first eight months, more than the 51,938 for all of last year, data compiled by Bloomberg and Autodata Corp. show. Initially sluggish sales of rechargeable cars are accelerating on cheap leases and price reductions.

Germans Renew Diesel Push

BMW, Mercedes, VW seek allies in bid to rally support for the fuel

For years, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen Group sang the praises of diesel in the United States as a lonely trio. They had little success changing U.S. laws to suit fuel efficient diesels, even as hybrids and EVs found special treatment in the form of tax incentives, unfettered access to high-occupancy vehicle lanes and preferred spaces in private parking lots. But now that other car companies are launching diesel-fueled versions of nameplates such as the Chevrolet Cruze sedan, Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV and Nissan Titan pickup, the Germans hope to find strong new allies in their push to make the United States friendlier to diesel, which boosts the fuel economy of a vehicle by about 30 percent. "I'm hoping that their entrance gets attention not just with the car-buying public, but with policymakers," said Anna Schneider, head of industry-government relations at Volkswagen Group of America, in an interview. The policymakers, she said, need to see that diesel is "not just a German thing -- it's a global thing."

NADAguides.com Survey Ranks Consumer Preferences for New Vehicles

Quality/Dependability moves ahead of Fuel Economy in latest survey; Driver-Assist Technologies score poorly

Both car and light-truck shoppers ranked Quality/Dependability as the No. 1 factor considered when making a new-vehicle purchasing decision, according to the latest survey from NADAguides.com. Fuel Economy, cited as the most important preference of both car and light-truck buyers in last year's survey, was selected as the second-most important factor by car shoppers in this year's survey. Light-truck shoppers ranked Brand as No. 2, one spot ahead of Fuel Economy. “While higher gasoline prices and stiffer federal regulations have raised the profile of fuel economy over the past few years, the survey results clearly indicate that car and light-truck shoppers are looking for a trouble-free ownership experience above all else,” said Jonathan Banks, executive automotive analyst for the NADA Used Car Guide.

Toyota Aims to Shift More Production to U.S., Invest $28M in Ann Arbor

Toyota's top U.S. sales executive said he would love to see the day when the automaker builds some of its three Prius hybrids in North America. “I think with our corporate philosophy, it is inevitable,” said Bob Carter, senior vice president for Toyota Motor Sales. “We just don't know when. Nothing has been green-lighted at this point.” The Prius comes in three sizes — all built in Japan. Together they are the most popular hybrids in the world. The largest Japanese automaker has announced plans to shift production of its Camry and Highlander hybrids from Japan to factories in Georgetown, Ky., and Princeton, Ind., respectively. Toyota said it will invest $28 million and hire about 60 workers at technical centers near Ann Arbor. The money will enhance the company's ability to design and test engines and transmissions.

Court Upholds NAM Victory Over NLRB Overreach

Manufacturers remain focused on protecting the American workplace from future threats

National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) President and CEO Jay Timmons issued a statement after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit refused the National Labor Relations Board's (NLRB) request to allow a rehearing of the NAM's victory over the NLRB's “posting requirement” rule issued by the court earlier this year. The NAM's successful appeal requested that the court invalidate the entire rule and asserts that the NLRB overstepped its statutory authority and ignored congressional intent by issuing the rule. “Today's court ruling again validates manufacturers' fight against an overreaching NLRB. The poster rule is a prime example of the aggressive agenda pursued by the NLRB in recent years, and the court has correctly decided that the Board has overstepped its authority.

Self-Driving Cars Could Be on US Roads By 2020, Whether or Not We're Ready

Cars that drive themselves could be on U.S. roads by the end of this decade. But don't take your foot off the pedal just yet. Automakers, universities and others are at various stages in the development of autonomous cars. Google is testing some in California. General Motors recently announced that its “Super Cruise” system, which uses radar and cameras to steer and stop a car, could be on Cadillacs by the end of this decade. And Nissan has boldly promised that it will have an autonomous driving system by 2020. But there are still a host of issues to work through before there's a driverless car in every driveway. State laws requiring a licensed driver at the wheel will have to change. Insurers will have to determine who's at fault if a self-driving car crashes. Highways will need to accommodate cars with and without drivers. And auto companies will need to ensure that cars' on-board computers can't be hacked.
