JPMorgan Likely to Lead Chrysler IPO

JPMorgan Chase & Co is likely to lead the underwriting of Chrysler Group LLC's initial public offering, CNBC reported late on Wednesday, citing a person familiar with the offer. An IPO would bring to a head the battle between Sergio Marchionne, who leads both Chrysler and its main shareholder Fiat SpA, and a healthcare trust fund affiliated with the United Auto Workers union. Chrysler plans to file documents this month that would allow its minority investor to sell shares in a stock market listing, a process that will slow Fiat's plans to take full control of the U.S. automaker.

Fitch Gives 'Negative' Long-Term Outlook to Fiat

Fitch Ratings changed Fiat SpA's long-term outlook to “negative” Wednesday, citing concerns about ongoing weakness in the European car market and the cost of completing its planned merger with Chrysler Group LLC. Fitch also reaffirmed its “BB-” rating on Fiat's long-term and senior unsecured debt, as well as its “B” rating on the automaker's short-term debt. Both are below investment grade. “The ratings and negative outlook reflect Fiat's weak financial profile and key credit metrics for the rating category, on a standalone basis, as well as poor mass-market product portfolio of Fiat excluding Chrysler,” Fitch said in a statement released Wednesday. “The ring-fencing of Chrysler's debt and cash flows limits the benefit of Chrysler's consolidation for Fiat from a financial standpoint.”

Why is GM Combining Buick and Opel Brands?

General Motors executives interviewed by Reuters said that the company is planning to more closely combine its Buick and Opel brands, which could lead to Buick customers in the U.S. and China seeing more European-style engineering from the German Opel. More closely combining the global product development of the brands will allow GM to cut costs and time while increasing the company's offerings in different markets around the world. According to Reuters, teamwork between the two brands could lead to some new European-inspired Buick vehicles available for drivers in the U.S. and China.

Ford to Invest $678 Million in Canada Plant to Boost Capacity

Ford Motor Co. said it would invest C$700 million ($678 million) in its Oakville assembly plant in Ontario to boost its North American manufacturing capacity as demand for cars surges to pre-recession levels. Ford, in a statement, said the investment would increase its annual spending on Canada-made auto parts by about C$200 million to nearly C$4 billion. The company said the investment would secure 2,800 jobs at the plant. Work on the project has already begun and will be done by the fall of 2014, Ford said.

Popularity of Pickups Raises Bar on Quality

We car consumers are a fickle bunch. According to a J.D. Power and Associates study, brand loyalty is evaporating, especially among younger buyers. In the car world, the few loyalists remaining are to be found among luxury buyers. Mercedes-Benz, for example, retains 59 percent of its buyers. On the truck side of the business, however, the situation is quite different. Full-size pickup buyers are extraordinary loyal and stick to their chosen brands. This helps explain why Ford, whose F-150 series is America’s best selling vehicle, had the overall industry’s highest loyalty rate of 61 percent in 2012. So with the boom in trucks helping to lead automakers toward a pre-recession level of sales this year, it’s worth looking at the way the pickup market is evolving.

Got $52,000? First 2014 Corvette Stingrays Have Been Shipped to Dealers

The wait for the highly anticipated 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray is almost over. General Motors said Wednesday it has begun shipping the Stingray to dealers. The automaker's Bowling Green, Ky., assembly plant has produced 1,000 units of the redesigned sports car so far. But if you've got cash burning a hole in your pocket, it might still take a while to get the latest 'Vette. Some dealers won't get their first Stingray for several months. Others will get just one initially as production ramps up.
