New Data Shows Accelerating Sales Of Plug-In Electric Cars

If you missed National Plug In Day last weekend don't worry, you'll have plenty of opportunities to get together with other enthusiasts for electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. But you might need a bigger venue. Starting from near zero, sales of plug-in cars are starting to take off, with help from some big price cuts. That means owning a plug-in car – a battery-powered, all-electric vehicle (BEV for short); or a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) – is nowhere near as lonesome as it was.

Toyota Calls Hybrids 'Sturdy Bridge' to Automotive Future

Chairman Uchiyamada says no major market for all-electric cars

Toyota Motor Corp. is committed to hybrid, gasoline-electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles to displace the use of gasoline, said Takeshi Uchiyamada, chairman of the world's largest auto maker. "The reason why Toyota doesn't introduce any major [all-electric product] is because we do not believe there is a market to accept it," Mr. Uchiyamada said in an interview following a speech on Monday at the Economic Club of Washington, D.C. Mr. Uchiyamada said he thinks electric vehicles require "two breakthroughs" on battery technology before they are viable as replacements for gasoline or hybrid-electric vehicles.

GM Gets Army Deal for Fuel Cell Tech

TARDEC unit in Warren [Mich.] will test designs before building it for military/consumer use

General Motors Co. said Monday it is has a new cooperative research and development agreement with the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center in Warren to further test and develop hydrogen fuel cell for up to five years. The Detroit-based automaker said the company and TARDEC will test the performance and durability of hydrogen fuel-cell materials and designs before building them into full-size systems. The two parties said working together to test technology for both military and consumer applications will give them “more tangible” results than working independently.

Shutdown Would Force NHTSA to Stop Vehicle Investigations

The government's auto safety regulator will halt defect investigations and public notification of new auto recalls in the event Congress fails to approve funding for the new budget year that starts Tuesday. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Monday it will be forced to furlough 333 of its 597 employees in the event of a partial government shutdown. NHTSA will also halt work on setting new regulations for autos, including its ongoing work on setting rear visiblity standards for all vehicles. The agency would also halt car assessment testing and release of star ratings. Investigations into odometer fraud and vehicle defects would be halted.

Chrysler Sales Rise 1% on Car, Ram Pickup Volume

Chrysler Group, aided by higher car and Ram pickup demand, reported a 1 percent rise in September deliveries, extending its streak of U.S. sales gains to 42 months. Car sales rose 3 percent while light-truck volume was flat. Sales rose 8 percent at Ram, 3 percent at Dodge and 2 percent at the Chrysler brand, the company said today. But volume slumped 24 percent at Fiat and 5 percent at Jeep. Deliveries of the Ram pickup -- one of Chrysler's most profitable vehicles and a top volume performer in a hot segment this year -- rose 8 percent to 28,145 units last month. Other automakers are scheduled to report September sales results later today in what is projected to be a rare speed bump for an industry on a roll. U.S. light-vehicle demand is expected to fall from a year earlier, marking the first decline since May 2011, largely because Labor Day holiday weekend sales were counted in August.

Europe's Car Makers Spin Their Wheels

Aging populations, driving-habit shifts presage lower sales

Sergio Felice embodies a woeful present for European auto makers. He may also reflect a dim future. Growing up in Italy, the 41-year-old bank consultant says, "it was always important to have a nice car." Now living in Barcelona, he had been saving up to buy an Audi TT. Then Europe's economic distress pushed him to reorganize his financial priorities, and owning a car is no longer one of them. Even when better times return, he says, he probably won't buy a car until he is in his 60s. He uses public transportation, a motorbike and car-sharing services, he says, and "I prefer to put the money I don't spend on a car in a retirement plan." Behind Mr. Felice's shift in driving habits lie trends that present Europe's car makers with a hard prospect: Whenever the Continent crawls back from its debt-crisis ravages, its auto market likely won't.
