NADA Convention Offers 174 Workshop Sessions

Seven workshop tracks cover numerous topics for dealers and their managers to boost performance and profitability

Sixty-four workshops will be presented by 100 speakers over 174 sessions at the 2014 NADA Convention & Expo in New Orleans from Jan. 24-27. “The workshop program is one of the great attractions of the NADA convention, and this year's program is the most comprehensive and information-packed ever offered,” said Kenneth C. Vance, chairman of NADA's Dealership Operations Committee, and a new-car dealer in Eau Claire, Wis. “Nearly half of the speakers are new to the convention workshop program.” Organized by NADA University Online, the online education and training arm of NADA, the sessions are designed to give new-car and -truck dealers the information and training needed to succeed in an increasingly competitive and rapidly changing retail market. “There is no other one-stop-learning opportunity like this anywhere for dealers and their managers to gain the insights and ideas they need to drive up performance and profitability as soon as they get back to their stores,” Vance added.

GM to Largely Stop Selling the Chevrolet Brand in Europe

General Motors Co. said Thursday it will largely stop selling its Chevrolet brand in Europe by the end of 2015, as the Detroit automaker plans to refocus its value offerings to customers in the region with its Opel and Vauxhall brands. The move will end an overlap between the Chevrolet and Opel brands in Western and Eastern Europe. GM Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson told The Detroit News earlier this year that GM would address what he called “the mistake” of bringing mass-market Chevrolet models into Europe where Opel is considered a mass market player. GM, Thursday, also said Cadillac will enhance its dealer network in Europe over the next three years as it plans to launch several new vehicles. Chevrolet will sell special vehicles such as the Corvette in Western and Eastern Europe and will continue to sell Chevrolet on a mainstream basis in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States, where GM says the brand is more defined and competitive.

General Motors Said to Plan Sale of Stake in Ally, Report Says

General Motors Co. is planning to sell its stake in Ally Financial Inc., the auto lender majority owned by U.S. taxpayers, a person with knowledge of the transaction told Bloomberg. Selling now would allow GM to avoid a months-long lockup tied to Ally's initial public offering, according to the person, who asked to remain anonymous because the deal isn't public. The automaker also may seek to tap demand for Ally's shares after the lender's private placement that raised $1.3 billion earlier this year was oversubscribed, the person said. That deal diluted GM's stake from about 9.9 percent to 8.5 percent, according to data from regulatory filings. Ally, formerly known as GMAC, was once the in-house financing arm of GM. The pending sale was reported by The Wall Street Journal, which described the deal as a private placement valued at about $900 million.

Tesla's Plan to Sell in Ohio Dodges Bullet

Tesla's business model appears safe in Ohio -- for now

The state's House Transportation, Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee didn't vote on a licensing amendment Tuesday that Tesla Motors Inc. says would prevent it from selling vehicles in Ohio. The amendment, supported by the Ohio Automobile Dealers Association, prohibits a "manufacturer or a subsidiary, parent, or affiliated entity of a manufacturer" from getting a license as a motor vehicle dealer in the state. The amendment would have been attached to Senate Bill 137, which requires drivers to move over when approaching a road-maintenance vehicle, according to the Columbus Dispatch. Committee Chairman Rex Damschroder, R-Fremont, Ohio, said the bill wasn't the right place for the licensing amendment. He said the Ohio legislature may take up the issue in January and have “thorough, vetted hearings with all of the parties involved to see if there's a solution.”

Ohio dealers plan to continue to defend the state's licensing and franchise system. "We will be interested in trying to present legislation that will protect the integrity of Ohio's licensing law," Tim Doran, president of the state's dealers association, said in an interview Wednesday. "I think the legislature is interested in seeing a bill that is fully discussed and debated."

GM, Ford Stocks Wobble on Worries About U.S. Market Price Cutting

The U.S. auto industry reported impressive sales on Tuesday with November's selling pace its strongest in six years, beating analysts' expectations. But not all is sitting well with some analysts and investors. In a report Wednesday, Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas pointed to aggressive month-end discounts around the Thanksgiving holiday weekend as a sign that the industry might be losing its pricing discipline. "In our opinion, [industry] commentary on pricing was the most alarming we've heard in the last four years and the tone on the incentive environment is changing," Mr. Jonas wrote. U.S. auto sales may be returning to prerecession levels, he noted, but "at what cost?"

2015 Mustang: A Makeover with Muscle

Ford Motor Co. shows its sixth-generation Mustang pony car to the world today, with a back-to-the-future fastback roofline, an all-new independent rear suspension — and for the first time ever, the option of a turbocharged four-cylinder EcoBoost engine. Fifty years ago, Ford revolutionized the auto industry by offering a sports car for the everyman, and now the Dearborn automaker is taking that idea to the rest of the world. Ford today will simultaneously unveil the 2015 Mustang in six cities, on four different continents. But that doesn't mean Ford has erased five decades of American swagger. “The new Mustang is evolutionary, not revolutionary,” said Jacques Brent, Ford's group marketing manager of large cars and SUVs.
