Why GM Dealers Have a Chance to Shine

There's no getting around the fact that General Motors is taking a clubbing right now. A huge recall, several lawsuits, a blistering congressional hearing, apologies to consumers, potential criminal investigations -- it's all bad. But then there are the retailers. The image of 2.6 million cars being recalled is ugly. But the prospect of 2.6 million GM customers queuing up to deal one-on-one and face-to-face with their local retailers is an opportunity to reclaim the day. This is precisely what makes the American auto retail franchise system excel: The manufacturer is always a cold and mysteriously remote abstract entity off somewhere in a corporate tower. The car dealer is the human face the consumer met in the showroom -- the person from those slightly amateurish TV ads that run during the ball game. This is the person whose picture appeared in the local paper surrounded by kids from the YMCA, the woman whose voice is heard in the radio spots, the manager who cut me a pretty good deal on my trade-in, the guy in the work shirt who topped off my wiper fluid and didn't charge me. GM's dealer body is about to get 2.6 million opportunities to make a good impression and remind people why they bought that car in the first place.

GM Dealers Field Calls, Manage Inventory While Waiting for Recall Parts

General Motors estimates repairs to 2.6 million small cars affected by a massive recall will not start until next week -- not this week as originally expected. That could leave many customers and dealers frustrated. Some dealers are fielding dozens of calls daily from customers wanting to know when their car will be fixed. “They've seen no parts. They have a big backlog of customers,” said Tim Doran, president of the Ohio Automobile Dealers Association in Dublin, Ohio. Dealers in the central and eastern states had expected to start getting parts Monday, April 7, to repair the recalled small cars, while West Coast dealers had expected to start receiving parts for the repairs Wednesday, April 9. But GM said there is no delay in parts, insisting it has always said the parts would arrive “the week of April 7,” Kevin Kelly, GM spokesman, said in an e-mail.

VW Orders U.S. Dealers to Stop Selling Cars with New Engine

Citing the risk of a leak in the transmission oil cooler, Volkswagen of America has ordered U.S. dealers to stop selling newer cars equipped with an automatic transmission and VW's most common engine, the 1.8-liter EA888. The stop-sale order, sent to dealers Tuesday and obtained by Automotive News, applies to cars produced after Feb. 1. VW spokesman Scott Vazin said the problem arose when a supplier changed the specifications of an O-ring linking the transmission oil cooler to the transmission. Vazin said VW noticed the leak at the port of entry and decided to issue the stop-sale order. VW has not issued a safety recall, but the company in talks with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about how to handle cars that have already been sold. “In extreme cases it could cause a fire,” Vazin said of the leaky O-ring. “That's why we're notifying NHTSA to see where the process goes.”

Washington Governor Signs Tesla Compromise Bill

Washington state officially approved Tesla Motors Inc.'s direct-sales model last Thursday, when Gov. Jay Inslee signed a bill allowing the electric-vehicle maker to continue selling its cars through its own, factory-owned showrooms instead of franchised dealerships in the state. The deal lets Tesla continue operations in the state and expand beyond its current two stores in Seattle and Bellevue. Bryan Imai, senior general counsel at the Washington State Auto Dealer Association, said provisions on the bill ensure a fair balance between dealers and manufacturers. The bill strengthens existing laws between automakers and state dealers, which prevent other automakers from selling directly to consumers. “The bill clarifies that a manufacturer that held a dealership license as of Jan. 1, 2014, would be exempt from the prohibition on manufacturer ownership,” Imai said. Tesla held a dealership license in Washington as of Jan. 1 this year, he said. The wording therefore would prevent other startup automakers from selling vehicles directly to consumers. “I think the bill, as a whole, really impacts dealerships in a positive way,” Imai said.

The National Automobile Dealers Association, in an e-mailed statement, said that it believes that sales should be through independent, franchised new-car dealers. “Some states allow automakers to sell directly, while others require dealers as an additional layer of accountability,” NADA said. “It is up to each state to decide whether Tesla or any manufacturer is complying with the laws regulating the sale of new cars and light trucks.” It added, “Consumers are better served by multiple retailers competing for their business.”

BMW, Daimler Upbeat on Luxury Car Outlook

BMW notched up record sales in March

BMW AG reported its strongest ever sales in March, defending its position as the world's top-selling luxury car brand though its lead over rivals Daimler AG and Audi AG is narrowing as sales in China surge and European car markets continue to recover. The German auto maker said sales at its BMW, Mini, and Roll-Royce brands rose nearly 9% to 487,024 vehicles. Sales were buoyed by BMW's X-series sport-utility vehicles and the 3-Series sedan. That compared with a 12% rise in Audi's first-quarter sales and a 14% rise at Daimler' Mercedes-Benz unit as Germany's leading auto makers all turned in record sales for the period.

Five Defects Lead Toyota to Recall 6.4M Worldwide

Toyota Motor Corp. is recalling 6.39 million vehicles worldwide -- about 2.34 million in the U.S. -- in actions for five different defects. None of the various defects affecting 27 Toyota models and the Toyota-built Pontiac Vibe and Subaru Trezia in various markets is linked with crashes or deaths, the Associated Press reports, but Toyota is aware of two fires linked to a defective starter. Some vehicles were recalled for more than one problem and the models' production spans April 2004 through August 2013.
