Fiat Chrysler Projects Major Boost in U.S. Market Share

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles [Tuesday] projected that it will have roughly the same U.S. market share in 2018 as Ford Motor Co. had last year and that its global sales would grow more than twice as fast as the rest of the industry. The company said it expects to sell 7 million vehicles globally in 2018, 59 percent more than it sold in 2013, and that net income would reach about 5 billion euros ($7 billion). The forecast calls for revenue to rise 52 percent to 132 billion euros ($183.9 billion), with more than half of the revenue continuing to come from North America. The projections represent annual growth rates averaging 10 percent for sales and 9 percent for revenue.

Congressional Probe Looks at Barra's, GM Executives' Links to Switch, Report Says

Congressional investigators are examining whether General Motors CEO Mary Barra and other senior executives were more involved than they have publicly acknowledged as the automaker considered how to deal with a deadly ignition switch issue linked to at least 13 deaths, three sources familiar with the probe told Reuters. The investigators also are examining whether executives acted fast enough, once they learned of the problem, said the congressional sources, who were not authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

NHTSA Probes GM Dealer for Recalled Vehicle Sale

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Tuesday it is opening an investigation into a General Motors dealer in Arizona who allegedly sold a recalled new car without repairing it. The federal safety auto agency said it has received information suggesting that Sands Chevrolet, located in Surprise, Ariz., sold and delivered “at least one new vehicle to a customer without having had all required safety recall repairs performed on that vehicle.” The vehicle was part of a May 2013 recall of the 2012-13 Buick Lacrosse/Regal and 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco.

FTC Approves Final Consent Orders in Deceptive Auto Dealers' Ads Cases

Following public comment periods, the Federal Trade Commission approved final consent orders involving 10 auto dealers' deceptive advertising charges. Under the settlement orders, the dealerships are prohibited from misrepresenting in any advertisement for the purchase, financing, or leasing of motor vehicles the cost of leasing a vehicle, the cost of purchasing a vehicle with financing, or any other material fact about the price, sale, financing, or leasing of a vehicle. When relevant, consent orders also address the alleged Truth in Lending Act and Consumer Leasing Act violations by requiring the dealerships to clearly and conspicuously disclose terms required by these credit and lease laws. In the case where the dealership misrepresented that consumers had won a prize, the consent order also prohibits misrepresenting material terms of any prize, sweepstakes, giveaway, or other incentive.

U-M Center Breaks Ground on Facility to Test Driverless Vehicles

Officials from a public-private partnership aimed at ushering in the next major leap in the automotive world symbolically broke ground on a town of the future. David Munson Jr. likens what's brewing at the University of Michigan's Mobility Transportation Center to the kind of leaps in technology offered up by the cartoons of his childhood. “Today reminds me of when I was a young boy and used to watch ‘The Jetsons' ... ,” the dean of the university's College of Engineering said Tuesday. “We're not doing flying cars here, but I think we're doing something more important, probably, and almost as impressive.” Next month, workers will begin construction of a $6.4 million “simulated urban environment” allowing for the testing and integration of connected and automated mobility systems.

Rolls-Royce Celebrates 110 years

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is celebrating a big birthday, one that some wags might say makes it only slightly older than lots of its customers. Rolls is turning 110. The moment being celebrated is the date, last Sunday, when Charles Rolls met Henry Royce for the first time. They agreed to form a company that outsurvived many others. Today, Rolls is owned by Germany's BMW. And the brand appears to be doing just fine. It offers the Phantom, the smaller Ghost and the new Wraith, a fastback, sportier Rolls. There were two big parties in the UK last Sunday. One was at the Goodwood Motor Circuit in West Sussex and at The Midland Hotel in Manchester.
