GM Recalls Challenge Company, Frustrate Customers

Nine million parts. That's what General Motors needs to repair millions of cars it has recalled since Feb. 7. With ignition switches, power steering motors and other parts slowly arriving at dealers, frustrated drivers face waits of weeks or months, some while driving cars they fear are unsafe. All told, the recalls present a Herculean task for GM. Multiple suppliers are involved, and parts need to go to more than 4,300 dealers. Dealers say small numbers of parts began arriving late in the week of April 7, and the pace has picked up. GM says it has shipped thousands of ignition switches and notified 1.4 million owners to set up repair appointments. Jerry Seiner, chairman of a Salt Lake City-area dealership group, says his technicians have replaced 23 ignition switches and lock mechanisms for owners who contacted them before April 1. After more publicity about the problem in April, more than 150 people now are waiting for parts. Seiner says parts are arriving three to four weeks after they're ordered.

Ford Shareholders Say Goodbye to Mulally, Reject End of Two-tier Stock

Ford Motor Co. shareholders turned the 59th annual meeting into a love-fest for retiring CEO Alan Mulally, who is stepping down July 1. The Thursday meeting, which wrapped up after about 80 minutes, came a day after Ford announced a $1.8 billion stock buyback. Ford stock was up 2.3 percent, or 35 cents, to close at $15.81. Separately, Ford shareholders again rejected a proposal to end the two-tier class system that allows the Ford family to control the company while only owning a small number of shares, but it got a record number of votes — 34.4 percent — up from 33.4 percent last year, Ford said.

Marchionne Says London to Have Fiat Chrysler Headquarters

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV, the company that will be formed from the combination of Fiat SpA and Chrysler Group LLC, will be based in London, marginalizing Italy’s role for the automaker. While Fiat Chrysler had long planned to have a fiscal domicile in the U.K. for tax purposes, it hadn’t selected a specific city. The manufacturer’s presence in the British capital will also be more than just a postal address. “The board, my office and some of my functions need to operate out of London,” Chief Executive Officer Sergio Marchionne said during a press conference yesterday in Auburn Hills, Michigan.

Toyota Motor Corp. will crank up production of the Camry sedan, the top-selling U.S. car the last dozen years, at its Kentucky plant after it stops farming out some manufacturing to Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. Toyota will move Camry production of about 100,000 units to Kentucky in the second half of 2016, it said today. The move will free up more capacity in Indiana for Tokyo-based Fuji Heavy, whose Subaru brand is on pace for a sixth consecutive annual sales record.
